This data release includes data and metadata on 1) the coverage and composition of plants 2) species specific plant traits 3) sampling locations and 4) environmental data. All sites were within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on Hawaii Island. Plant cover data were obtained from National Park Service Inventory and Monitoring Program. Plant trait data was collected for these plots in 2014. This study aims to evaluate how traits of native and exotic plant species change along environmental gradients and what this suggests for plant competition and invasion.

This data release includes data and metadata on tree and shrub basal area as well as bird-mediated and passive seed rain for sites selected to have a range of understory cover under canopy trees (Metrosideros polymorpha and Acacia koa). It also includes seedling germination and survival data for a large-scale seed addition and grass removal experiment that varied both seed rain and grass cover. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study asks what thresholds of seed rain and native and exotic plant cover are needed for passive forest regeneration.

This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates, foliar nitrogen and carbon, grass biomass, soil nitrogen and carbon, and native outplant survival rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.

This data release includes data and metadata on 1) avian diet 2) seed rain 3) understory plant composition 4) seedling abundance and 5) sampling locations for these sites. In addition it includes data on seedling abundance, grass cover and light levels for a grass removal/seed addition experiment . All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. This study looked at multiple biotic interactions that potentially lead to self-reinforcing feedbacks within intact forest and degraded forest sites.

This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents survival of endangered Portulaca sclerocarpa, percent cover of vegetation surrounding Portulaca sclerocarpa, as well as soil depth and soil temperature. All data were taken between 2011-2021 in the Puhimau Geothermal Area in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

This data release includes metadata and tabular data that document estimates of litterfall, koa moth (Scotorythra paludicola) caterpillar frass production, soil nutrients, and foliar nutrients during 2013-2014 at Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge. During this time, there was a massive defoliation event of Acacia koa (koa) trees by the koa moth. We monitored these metrics in 4 sites that varied in forest structure and composition at Hakalau. We used litter traps to monitor koa litter fall over time and foliar %N to estimate N inputs from litter. This data release includes metadata and tabular data that documents growth and root nodulation of Acacia koa and Sophora chrysophylla in different soil types. Soils contained innoculum from conspecific versus heterospecific plants and were taken from areas that had burned in the 2018 Keauhou fire versus areas that had not burned . All plants were grown and data were taken in 2019 in a shadehouse structure in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Specifically, water infiltration measurements, interepreted field-saturated hydraulic conductivity values, ungulate activity, vegetation cover, general soil and weather conditions data are included. Fog has been demonstrated to support plant growth, survival and ecosystem maintenance spanning rainfall and elevation gradients across the world. Persistent fog and strong winds on high mountain slopes in Hawaiʻi create a unique ecological environment. We collected stem diameter measurements of three native plant species at Nakula Natural Area Reserve, Maui, during 2016-2019 and numerous environmental variables to examine how rain, fog and soil moisture influence plant water deficit and growth. We also collected seedling growth and survival data within plots where grass was removed, and control plots (no grass removal), to assess if and how grass removal influenced seedling growth and soil moisture.

This data release includes data and metadata containing (1) ʻōhiʻa (Metrosideros polymorpha) tree locations tested for Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death (ROD) at Keaukaha Military Reserve, Hilo, HI (2) out-planted ʻōhiʻa seedling information and survival status and (3) raw quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) results for all Ceratocystis lukuohia and huliohia testing. Data were used in the analysis for the manuscript "Successful restoration of Metrosideros polymorpha (ʻōhiʻa) is possible in forest sites with active Rapid ʻŌhiʻa Death infections." ʻŌhiʻa seedlings were planted under ROD-infected and non-infected ʻōhiʻa trees and soil, and monitored for ROD for one year.
