Vegetation change is an important issue facing managers at Isle Royale National Park (ISRO). These data were created using high-resolution imagery collected in the winter of 2017 which was compared to the vegetation map of the National Park published in 2000 (project imagery collected in 1994 and 1996). These data review where vegetation cover type, density, and pattern have changed since imagery collection for the 2000 publication and provide a proposed reason for the change.

During summer 2019, botanists with the Maine Natural Areas Program collected data from 94 vegetation plots for plant community characterization. The sampling data were entered into the National Park Service PLOTS version 4.0 (National Park Service 2018) for analyses to characterize vegetation associations in the U.S. National Vegetation Classification. An accuracy assessment was performed on the draft version of the vegetation map layer. During the summer of 2020, field crews collected data from 107 stratified and randomly selected sites for evaluating the accuracy of the vegetation map layer for those map classes representing U.S. National Vegetation Classification associations. The accuracy assessment field data...

The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Seboeis Unit Vegetation Mapping Project was initiated in the fall of 2019 by a grant through the USGS Natural Resource Preservation Program to classify and map vegetation types of the Seboeis Unit thereby providing resource managers and biological researchers with useful baseline vegetation information. The Study Area Boundary (SAB) for this project is similar to, but not exactly the same as, the official boundary for the Seboeis Unit. Because of uncertainty on the exact location of the Seboeis Unit boundary, mapping may have occurred beyond the official boundary. Additionally, this SAB is based upon the Seboeis Unit boundary as it appeared in September of 2019.

These data are the results of the field effort to collect accuracy assessment data for testing the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument Seboeis Unit Vegetation Mapping Project vegetation map. Data collection was assisted by Jennifer Tibbetts, David Rubin, and Tiffany Reese. An accuracy assessment was performed on the draft version of the vegetation map layer....

Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument was established on August 24, 2016. The monument spans mountains and forest lands in north central Maine. High-resolution aerial imagery was collected on October 5, 2019 with a Phase One iXU-R 180 RGB camera co-mounted with a Phase One iXU-RS 160 Achromatic camera. Images from the two cameras are merged to create 4-band imagery that can be displayed as either true-color (RGB) or color-infrared (CIR). The imagery has a resolution of approximately 0.15 meter/pixel (6 inches).

This layer provides the vegetation map for the Seboeis Unit. Information for this layer was collected in 2019 and 2020. After completion of the accuracy assessment process, 33 map classes represent the Seboeis Unit of the monument. Of the 33 map classes that represent the Seboeis Unit, 28 represent natural (including ruderal) vegetation types, consisting of 50 U.S....

Over the summer of 2020, the Illinois Waterway (IWW) was closed to complete maintenance on lock chambers along the Illinois River. This closure restricted vessel traffic along the river and potentially changed habitat characteristics for aquatic vegetation establishment and growth. To assess if patterns of vegetation establishment and growth changed during the closure, peak biomass imagery from 2019 (pre closure) and 2021 (post closure) were compared for a vegetation response. This assessment found locations where aquatic vegetation increased and locations where aquatic vegetation decreased.
This project created a detailed vegetation map of the Seboeis Unit of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument for National Park Service managers. This is the final data covering all final products of the project related to tabular data collected during the project and vector data created from project imagery.

Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) is a 50,000 acre refuge overlaid on portions of the former Jefferson Proving Ground (JPG) in Jefferson, Jennings, and Ripley counties, Indiana. Beginning in 1996, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) began managing the area. Big Oaks NWR was established in June 2000 as an “overlay” Refuge through a 25-year real estate permit from the U.S. Army. As an overlay refuge, the U.S. Army retains ownership and the USFWS manages the property as Big Oaks NWR. Big Oaks NWR hosts a variety of different habitat types, providing for a diversity of wildlife species. The refuge is unique in that it contains one of the largest contiguous forest blocks and grassland complexes in southeast...
