Daily lake surface temperatures estimates for 185,549 lakes across the contiguous United States from 1980 to 2020 generated using an entity-aware long short-term memory deep learning model. In-situ measurements used for model training and evaluation are from 12,227 lakes and are included as well as daily meteorological conditions and lake properties. Median per-lake estimated error found through cross validation on lakes with in-situ surface temperature observations was 1.24 °C. The generated dataset will be beneficial for a wide range of applications including estimations of thermal habitats and the impacts of climate change on inland lakes.

Fish data on six species (black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), northern pike (Esox lucius), walleye (Sander vitreus), and yellow perch (perca flavescens)) caught in gill nets and trap nets between 2000 and 2019 during Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) fisheries surveys done in the months of June through September. Fish catch and effort (number of nets set overnight) comes from over 1,000 Minnesota lakes. In addition to fisheries data, we included additional information concerning lake characteristics, predicted water temperature, and watershed land use. Lake area and maximum depth were obtained from MNDNR public databases....

Fisheries monitoring data detailing the lengths and or ages of fish caught during state agency fisheries surveys. These data were collected and shared with our team from: Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks, and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Data include length and age data for seven sport fish species: black crappie (Pomoxis nigromaculatus), bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus), largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides), northern pike (Esox lucius), smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu), walleye (Sander vitreus),...

With shortening snow season duration, snowshoe hares are experiencing increased camouflage mismatch with their environment reducing survival. Phenological variation of hare molt at regional scales could facilitate local adaptation in the face of climate change, but the level of variation, especially along the southern range boundary, is unknown. Using a network of trail cameras and historical museum specimens, we (1) developed contemporary and historical molt phenology curves in the Upper Great Lakes region, USA.

Data files contain the simulated mean daily environmental conditions experienced by particles (which can be assumed to be planktonic larval alewife or yellow perch) in Lake Michigan during March 15 - July 31 of past and future years. Simulations were generated by integrating a series of climatic, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, and Lagrangian particle dispersion (LPD) models. For each year, 42,765 particles (i.e., each representing a theoretical larval fish) were released from coastal and nearshore locations and tracked sub-hourly for 50-days following their release. Each year's dataset summarizes individual particle experiences (e.g., light, zooplankton prey, temperature) into daily averages.

A temperature-dependent surplus production model has been used to estimate the historical productivity of freshwater fish populations. The data utilized in this analysis includes: (1) an index of relative abundance; (2) fishery removals and subsidies from stocking programs; and (3) lake growing degree days. Surplus production represents the net change in population biomass in the absence of fishing, reflecting the interplay of population dynamics such as recruitment (gain), individual fish growth (gain), and natural mortality (loss).

Fish catch and effort data for three species caught in gill nets and trap nets between 1988 and 2019 as part of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) fisheries surveys conducted during the summer and early fall are included from over 1,300 Minnesota lakes. The three fish species included are: bluegill (Lepomis marochirus) a warm-water adapted species, yellow perch (Perca flavescens) a cool-water adapted species, and cisco (Coregonus artedi) a cold-water adapted species. Additional data concerning lake characteristics and surrounding land cover were also included. Mean July lake surface temperature was calculated using simulated daily water temperatures. Watershed land use including agricultural, barren,...

This data was used for the analysis in the paper "Assessing factors related to Walleye stocking success in the midwestern United States". This data includes stocking records of walleye from the Midwestern United States and subsequent evaluations of these stockings as provided by state agencies. Additionally, attributes of lakes such as size (depth, area), trophic state, and temperature are included to evaluate factors that relate to walleye stocking success. A second copy of the data is included that relies on imputation to fill in data gaps. Methodological processes are outlined in the associated paper.

These data include aerobic scope and thermal tolerance measurements from two cisco (Coregonus artedi) populations to evaluate performance and potential adaptation to warming Great Lakes habitats. Cisco come from two stock sources: 1) a northern latitude Lake Huron stock collected as gametes from Les Cheneaux Islands, MI, USA in 2015 and raised in a USGS aquaculture lab in Ann Arbor, MI, and 2) a southern latitude stock from Crooked Lake, Noble County, IN, USA collected as adults from the wild in 2021 and 2022 and brought to Ann Arbor, MI. Data include three primary datasets. "Aerobic Scope Compiled Data" provides measures of cisco (Coregonus artedi) metabolic rates from 30L swim chamber respirometry trials (n=88)....

The data comprise observations of 12 species of fish from Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) fish survey data. Surveys were conducted between 1968 & 2022 generally for the purposes of assessing fishery statuses in inland lakes. The species in these data represent only a subset of all species present in DNR surveys, and were selected for our study because of relevance to stakeholders and relative vulnerability to the gears used to survey the populations.

Monitoring overwinter survival is valuable for understanding population dynamics of winter-adapted species. We quantified overwinter survival of Ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus) in Sandhill State Wildlife Area in Wisconsin using data from radio-collared birds. We used known fate survival models to quantify weekly survival across five winter seasons. This dataset includes encounter histories for each bird and individual covariate values for demographic information, weekly weather conditions, and land cover.
