We assessed the resilience of wetlands to sea-level rise along a transitional gradient from tidal freshwater forested wetland (TFFW) to oligohaline marsh by measuring processes controlling wetland elevation. We identified fundamental differences in how resilience is maintained across wetland community types, which have important implications for management activities that aim to restore or conserve resilient systems.

Above- and belowground production in coastal wetlands are important contributors to carbon accumulation and ecosystem sustainability. As sea level rises, we can expect shifts to more salt-tolerant communities, which may alter these ecosystem functions and services. Although the direct influence of salinity on species-level primary production has been documented, we lack an understanding of the landscape-level response of coastal wetlands to increasing salinity. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) researchers often require detailed information regarding emergent marsh vegetation types (i.e., fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline) for modeling habitat capacities and mitigation. In response, the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management produced a detailed change classification of emergent marsh vegetation types in coastal Louisiana from 2007 and 2013. Forest surveys were conducted in nine 20 m x 25 m study plots, split into 3 representatives each for three forest types in Great Dismal Swamp, VA and NC, USA, December 2015 - February 2018. Trees, saplings, and shrubs were identified to species and measured for estimates of standing stocks. Standing stock data include: tree diameter at breast height (dbh), height, and condition; sapling dbh; shrub diameter at root collar, and height. In each plot, roughly 10 co-dominant trees were equipped with dendrometer bands and measured annually for growth estimates.

The sustainability of coastal wetlands largely hinges on their ability to accrue elevation capital at a rate that equals or exceeds relative sea-level rise. A better understanding of these processes is needed to accurately assess the sustainability of these landscapes, and to predict their response to restoration measures such as sediment delivery through river diversions.

This data release includes a file geodatabase with land cover maps for a 313-kilometer segment along the mainstem Klamath River corridor downstream from Iron Gate Dam, CA. The maps were derived from high-resolution (15cm) imagery and topobathymetric elevation data, collected by NV5 Geospatial (formerly QSI, Inc) and published on Open Topography (https://doi.org/10.5069/G9DN436N). Acquisition dates spanned 06/01/2018 to 06/14/2018. The area of interest was discretized into three zones and land cover maps were generated using geoprocessing tools, implemented in ArcMap 10.8.1, and image classification tools, implemented in Ecognition 10.2. In the face of sea level rise and as climate change conditions increase the frequency and intensity of tropical storms along the north-Atlantic Coast, coastal areas will become increasingly vulnerable to storm damage, and the decline of already-threatened species could be exacerbated. These data provide information regarding beryllium-7 radioisotope activity, bulk density, and percent organic matter for wetland soils in the immediate outfall region of an operational Mississippi River diversion. From them, information relating to short-term mineral sediment mass accumulation rates and sediment retention rates in the receiving basin can be inferred.

Coastal wetlands significantly contribute to global carbon storage potential. Sea-level rise and other climate change-induced disturbances threaten coastal wetland sustainability and carbon storage capacity. It is critical that we understand the mechanisms controlling wetland carbon loss so that we can predict and manage these resources in anticipation of climate change.

A green-tree reservoir (GTR) is a stand of bottomland hardwoods that is intentionally flooded in the fall and winter to support migrating waterfowl. Bottomland hardwood forest plots, installed 1985-1987 in the GTR on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (FNWR), are measured every 5-6 years to monitor tree survival, growth, and mortality. An accompanying datafile contains the names, locations, and elevations of the forest plots. These parameters are defined in the Entity and Attributes section of this metadata file.
