This dataset includes 800m resolution long-term average estimates of the contributions to the quick-flow runoff component of the water budget over the time period from 2000-2013 and annual estimates for the individual years. These estimates were developed with a new empirical regression for surface runoff data generated from a USGS-developed hydrograph separation program (PART) run on streamflow data from 1434 gaged watersheds as a function of surficial geology type (USGS), precipitation (PRISM), and soil hydraulic conductivity (STATSGO). Irrigated water quantities reported in the 2000, 2005, and 2010 USGS Water Use datasets are also incorporated as effective additional precipitation. The contributing input datasets...

This data set consists of the results of the statistical analysis (Asquith and others, 2020) of the remaining 10,295 water level records that met specific criteria to ensure that the water level records were representative of true groundwater conditions in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. The data are provided in a CSV file named StatisticalAnalysis.csv, and in the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefile format consisting of a group of files that have been compressed into a zip archive named StatisticalAnalysis.zip.

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired November 2019 to March 2020 along 24,030 line-kilometers (line-km) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP). Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different airborne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. TEMPEST time-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 300 meters (m), depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that detects the...

This data release contains datasets developed for the purpose of training and applying random forest models to the Mississippi Embayment Regional Study Area. The random forest models are designed to predict total stream flow and baseflow as a function of a combination of watershed characteristics and monthly weather data. These datasets are associated with a report (SIR 2022-5079) and code contained in a USGS GitLab repository. The GitLab repository (https://code.usgs.gov/map/maprandomforest/) contains much more information about how these data may be used to supply predictions of stream flow and baseflow.

Airborne geophysical surveys were acquired in March 2018 and May 25 through August 7, 2021 using a helicopter-based platform. These surveys were collected along 10,706 line-kilometers (line-km) within selected areas of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) and the Chicot Aquifer System in the southeastern United States. The airborne geophysical surveys include electromagnetic, magnetic, and radiometric sensor data collected in rivers and levees throughout the two areas to evaluate groundwater and surface-water interaction, riverine ecosystems, and infrastructure. This data release contains three child items that provide: Minimally processed (raw) data supplied by the airborne contractor (Xcalibur Multiphysics)...

Bottom altitudes of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA) were compiled from interpretations of subsurface geophysical logs (log picks) at about 10,000 boreholes and wells located throughout the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) that were available from previous investigations. Five sources of the bottom altitude data are listed numerically in the Cross Reference section (below) and correspond with the Ref_code listed in the .shp dataset. Borehole geophysical data (log picks) were referenced (corrected) to the National Elevation Dataset (NED) 10-meter digital elevation model (DEM; https://nationalmap.gov/elevation.html). Log picks that required a DEM correction of less than 20 feet were retained for...

This dataset includes 1km resolution monthly timescale estimates of evapotranspiration (ET) for the 2000-2015 timespan. These new SSEBop-WB estimates were developed by combining a previously published long-term annual average evapotranspiration map based on water balance constraints with the SSEBop remote sensing ET product (see Associated Items). The combination aims to leverage the advantages of each approach in gaining both the temporal resolution of remote sensing data and the long-term magnitude constraints of ground-based data. This data release also includes other supporting data associated with the publication of these estimation methods in a concurrent journal article. Analyses in the journal article included...

This dataset contains the original water level records extracted from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ (MoDNR) Well Information Management System (WIMS). It consists of records of wells drilled in or through the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer in a 7-county area in southeast Missouri as reported by the well drillers. Records that met specific criteria were identified and used for further statistical analysis to ensure that a particular well was open to the aquifer. Records that did not meet the selected criteria were identified and noted in the dataset with the identifier of "Threshold 1" through “Threshold 6”, which are fully explained in the metadata. Each original record can be found in...

A potentiometric surface map for spring 2016 was created for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer, which was referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), using most of the available groundwater-altitude data from wells and surface-water-altitude data from streamgages. Most of the wells were measured annually or one time, after installation, but some wells were measured more than one time in a year and a small number of wells were measured continually. Streamgages were typically operated continuously. The potentiometric surface map for 2016 was created as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Availability and Use Science Program to support investigations that characterize...

This dataset contains the final water level records (10,132) that meet all threshold criteria and had an absolute residual less than 20 feet. The threshold of 20 feet was selected based on water level changes of the U.S. Geological Survey groundwater site 363551090152801 (Qulin) in the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer. The data are provided in a CSV file named FinalDataset.csv, and in the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) shapefile format consisting of a group of files that have been compressed into a zip archive named FinalDataset.zip.

These netCDF output files from the Soil-Water-Balance Model contain daily calculations for the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System model domain of irrigation and net infiltration (recharge) amounts for the years 1915 to 1999. Input files used in the SWB run included historical agricultural land use as estimated by Sohl and others (2015), soil properties derived from NRCS gSSURGO and STATSGO data (Wieczorek, 2014), and 20th century gridded precipitation and air temperature as estimated by Livneh and others (2013). Spatial extent of the output files is the approximate boundary of the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System. Further details about the generation and application of the data can be found...

The Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) has become one of the most important agricultural regions in the US, and it relies heavily on a groundwater system that is poorly understood and shows signs of substantial change. The heavy use of the available groundwater resources has resulted in significant groundwater-level declines and reductions in base flow in streams within the MAP. These impacts are limiting well production and threatening future water-availability for the region. This product will help not only scientists in our center, but also at a national level. This product will also be part of a larger study encompassing the Mississippi Alluvial Plain region. The Mississippi Alluvial Plain extent was delineated...

Input files used in the SWB run included agricultural land use as estimated by Brown and Pervez (2014) and provided by the USDA National Agricultural Statitical Service and soil properties derived from NRCS gSSURGO and STATSGO data (Wieczorek, 2014).
