Publicly available geospatial data were identified, collated, and analyzed for a region of karst terrain extending from Albany to Buffalo, New York. A series of geospatial datasets were assembled to determine the location and extent of karstic rock; bedrock geology and depth to bedrock; average water-table configuration; surficial geology; soil type, thickness, and hydraulic conductivity; land cover; and closed depressions in the land surface First release: 2021 Revised: July 2022 (ver. 2.0) Revised: October 2022 (ver. 3.0) Revised: January 2024 (ver. 4.0)

From August 2018 to October 2019, the U.S. Geological Survey collected spatially high-resolution water quality data as part of five shoreline synoptic surveys around the perimeters of Owasco, Seneca, and Skaneateles Lakes within the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Water-quality data were collected just below water surface utilizing YSI EXO2 multiparameter sondes and portable nitrate sensors paired with real-time GPS data as part of a HABs monitoring program in the Finger Lakes. In October 2019, water-quality data collection was paired with discrete phytoplankton grab samples on Owasco Lake and Seneca Lake. Phytoplankton grab samples were collected just below water surface with a peristaltic pump at twelve locations...

Static flood inundation boundary extents were created along the entire shoreline of Lake Ontario in Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, and Wayne Counties in New York by using recently acquired (2007, 2010, 2014, and 2017) light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The flood inundation maps, accessible through the USGS Flood Inundation Mapping Program website at https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources/science/flood-inundation-mapping-fim-program, depict estimates of the areal extent and water depth of shoreline flooding in 8 segments corresponding to adjacent water-surface elevations (stages) at 8 USGS lake gages on Lake Ontario. This item includes data sets for segment E - Lake Ontario...

A digital representation of closed depression features overlying and adjacent to New York’s carbonate-bedrock aquifers. Includes closed depressions that are both natural and anthropogenic in origin. The features were derived from a digital contour database obtained from https://topotools.cr.usgs.gov/contour_data.php. The original contour dataset was generated from the National Elevation Dataset (NED) and the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) in a fully automated process. The process is described in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2012–5167.
Macroinvertebrate samples were collected from streams tributary to Honnedaga Lake and from the Middle Branch of the Black River during 2012-2016 and analyzed for methylmercury concentrations and for stable isotope ratios of nitrogen and carbon. Macroinvertebrates were identified in the field, and the level of taxonomic resolution varied from order to species; most taxa were identified to the family level. Specimens were field-processed into composite samples, field-frozen, and submitted to the mercury laboratory for freeze-drying and analysis. Subsamples were then submitted to the stable isotope laboratory for analysis of nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios. This database contains the resulting data and associated...

This data release contains dissolved cyanotoxin concentrations for microcystins (MC), cylindrospermopsins (CYL), anatoxins (ATX), and saxitoxins (STX) assessed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry or tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS and LC-MS/MS, respectively) in extracts from SPATT (n=95) and DGT samplers (n=10) deployed on three Finger Lakes (Owasco, Seneca, and Skaneateles) between June and November 2019. Relative percent contributions of microcystin congeners are also provided for samples analyzed by LC-MS and LC-MS/MS. Solid phase adsorption toxin tracking (SPATT) and diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) are types of passive environmental samplers containing...

The USGS uses an integrated geologic, hydrologic, and geophysical approach to characterize the unconsolidated and bedrock aquifers in the State. Hydrogeologic framework characterization is the backbone of most groundwater-related studies, including those involving aquifer mapping, saltwater-intrusion delineation, groundwater flow and transport modeling, geologic-hazards evaluation, water-tunnel construction and repair, geothermal assessments, and groundwater-quality sampling. The NYWSC uses state-of-the-art geophysical equipment for training and methods development for geophysics that include borehole-wall imagers, gamma spectral, induction, and full waveform sonic tools, and electromagnetic and heat-pulse flowmeters....

From July through December 2016, 56 environmental samples were collected from the Mohawk and Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected from nine production wells and 13 domestic wells in the Mohawk River Basin, and 17 production wells and 17 domestic wells in the Western New York River Basins. Samples were collected and processed using standard USGS methods and analyzed for 320 constituents including physicochemical properties, dissolved gases, major ions, nutrients, trace elements, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, radionuclides, and indicator bacteria. Analytical methods are described and referenced in Gaige and others (2023). Five of the Mohawk River Basin wells (HE 622, HE 624, OE1468, SA1501,...

Transects of near-surface continuous water-quality data and vertical profiles of the same parameters were collected over a 24-hour period from September 7 to September 8, 2023 in the Arthur Kill. The Arthur Kill is a tidal strait located between Staten Island, New York, and Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, and connects Newark Bay to the north and Raritan Bay to the south. It is a major shipping channel for the Port of New York and New Jersey surrounded by industrial and highly developed land. Transects were collected using a Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) EXO2 series water-quality sonde with a 5-second data collection interval while the boat was in motion. Vertical profiles of water-quality parameters...
This data release contains about 60 million point cloud data points collected during 27 scans of a section of the western shoreline of the Shinnecock Peninsula in Suffolk County, New York. Data were collected during July and October of 2022. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides discretely measured cyanotoxin, chlorophyll-a, and cyanobacterial toxin genetic data for samples collected from twelve large river sites throughout the United States, from June through October 2019. Discrete water-quality samples were analyzed for cyanotoxins (anatoxin, cylindrospermopsin, microcystin, and saxitoxin), chlorophyll-a, and cyanobacterial toxin genetics as part of a National Water-Quality Assessment Project pilot study to describe cyanobacteria and cyanotoxin occurrence in the Nation's large rivers. The data release contains the genetic data (in .csv and .xlsx formats), qPCR standard curve information (in .csv and .xlsx formats), and a readme...

From July through November 2018, 48 environmental samples and four quality-control samples were collected throughout the Lower Hudson, Chemung, and Eastern Lake Ontario River Basins. Samples were collected from seven production wells and eight domestic wells in the Eastern Lake Ontario Basin, 13 production wells and 12 domestic wells in the Lower Hudson River Basin, and four production wells and four domestic wells in the Chemung River Basin. Of the wells sampled, 27 were completed in bedrock and 21 were completed in sand and gravel. Approximately 20 percent of samples were collected from wells that were previously sampled in 2003, 2008, and 2013. Groundwater samples were collected prior to any treatment or filtration...
