The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate ocean circulation, waves, and sediment transport to study barrier island breaches that occurred during Hurricane Matthew (2016) near Matazas FL, and Hurricane Sandy (2012) at Fire Island, NY. Hurricane Sandy was a Saffir-Simpson Category 2 hurricane that transited the Western Atlantic Ocean relatively far offshore of the US East Coast for five days until turning west to make landfall in New Jersey on 29 October 2012, causing extreme coastal erosion and flooding with destruction to residences and infrastructure along the East coast, particularly in the New York Bight. Maximum...
The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate three-dimensional hydrodynamics and waves to study salinity intrusion in the Delaware Bay estuary for 2016, 2018, 2021. Salinity intrusion in coastal systems is due in part to extreme events like drought or low-pressure storms and longer-term sea level rise, threatening economic infrastructure and ecological health. Along the eastern seaboard of the United States, approximately 13 million people rely on the water resources of the Delaware River basin, which is actively managed to suppress the salt front (or ~0.52 daily averaged psu line) through river discharge targets. However,...

We used the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST; Warner and others, 2010) model to simulate ocean circulation, waves, and sediment transport in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, during Hurricane Sandy. The simulation period was from October 27 to November 4, 2012. Initial conditions for the salinity and temperature fields in the domain were acquired from a 7-month simulation of the same domain (Defne and Ganju, 2018). We used a 2012 digital terrain model (Andrews and others, 2015) to prescribe the prestorm bathymetry. Wetting and drying was enabled, wave-current interaction was modeled with a boundary-layer formulation accounting for the apparent roughness of waves, and the vortex force formulation...

Transport of material in an estuary is important for water quality and hazards concern. We studied these processes in the Hudson River Estuary, located along the northeast coast of the U.S. using the COAWST numerical modeling system. A skill assessment of the COAWST model for the 3-D salinity structure of the estuary has been successfully studied in the past, and the present research extended that understanding to look at both physical and numerical mixing. The model grid extends from the south at the Battery, NY to the north in Troy, NY. The simulation is performed from March 25 to July 11, 2005 (111 days). The development of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) growth model within the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST) model leads to a change in SAV biomass. The SAV biomass is computed from temperature, nutrient loading and light predictions obtained from coupled hydrodynamics (temperature), bio-geochemistry (nutrients) and bio-optical (light) models. In exchange, the growth of SAV sequesters or contributes nutrients from the water column and sediment layers. The presence of SAV modulates current and wave attenuation and consequently affects modelled sediment transport. The model of West Falmouth Harbor in Massachusetts, USA was simulated to study the seagrass growth/dieback pattern in a hypothetical...

Restoration of the Florida Everglades, a substantial wetland ecosystem within the United States, is one of the largest ongoing restoration projects in the world. Decision-makers and managers within the Everglades ecosystem rely on ecological models forecasting indicator wildlife response to changes in the management of water flows within the system. One such indicator of ecosystem health, the presence of wading bird communities on the landscape, is currently assessed using three species distribution models that assume perfect detection and report output on different scales that are challenging to compare against one another. We sought to use current advancements in species distribution modeling to improve models...

This data release includes representative cluster profiles (RCPs) from a large (>24,000) selection of coral reef topobathymetric cross-shore profiles (Scott and others, 2020). We used statistics, machine learning, and numerical modelling to develop the set of RCPs, which can be used to accurately represent the shoreline hydrodynamics of a large variety of coral reef-lined coasts around the globe. In two stages, the data were reduced by clustering cross-shore profiles based on morphology and hydrodynamic response to typical wind and swell wave conditions. By representing a large variety of coral reef morphologies with a reduced number of RCPs, a computationally feasible number of numerical model simulations can be...

Here we present surface current results from a physics-based, 3-dimensional coupled ocean-atmosphere numerical model that was generated to understand coral larval dispersal patterns in Maui Nui, Hawaii, USA. The model was used to simulate coral larval dispersal patterns from a number of existing State-managed reefs and large tracks of reefs with high coral coverage that might be good candidates for marine-protected areas (MPAs) during 8 spawning events during 2010-2013. The goal of this effort is to provide geophysical data to help provide guidance to sustain coral health in Maui Nui, Hawaii, USA. Each model output run is available as a netCDF file with self-contained attribute information. Each file name is appended...

The endangered Cape Sable seaside sparrow (Ammospiza maritima mirabilis; CSSS) occurs in marl prairie habitat at the southern end of the Everglades, at the southernmost part of the Florida peninsula. The locations of three of its six subpopulations are proximate to the coast, putting them at risk for inundation caused by sea level rise (SLR). The spatially explicit predictive model EverSparrow provides probability of CSSS presence estimates based on hydrology, fire history, and vegetation. We developed two hydrologic scenarios of SLR using projections from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and University of Florida's GeoPlan Center, using a modeled restoration scenario of the current landscape-scale water...

The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST; Warner and others, 2019; Warner and others, 2010) model was used to simulate ocean circulation, waves, and sediment transport in Cape Cod Bay, MA. Larger scale simulations of the US East Coast (Warner and Kalra, 2022) were used to drive numerical grids covering the Gulf of Maine (~1000m resolution) with a two-way nested downscaled region into Cape Cod Bay (~250m resolution). Results were analyzed to investigate bay-scale dynamics of net transport, seafloor elevation changes, and net sediment fluxes. Those results were further used to drive a coastal scale grid that stretched along ~17km of the coast from the Cape Cod Canal to Sandy Neck Beach. This nearshore...

In exchange, the growth of SAV sequesters or contributes nutrients from the water column and sediment layers. The presence of SAV modulates current and wave attenuation and consequently affects modelled sediment transport. The idealized domain simulation shows that the newly developed framework can simulate a two-way coupled SAV-biogeochemistry-hydrodynamic...

Climate change information simulated by global climate models is downscaled using statistical methods to translate spatially course regional projections to finer resolutions needed by researchers and managers to assess local climate impacts. Several statistical downscaling methods have been developed over the past fifteen years, resulting in multiple datasets derived by different methods. We apply a simple monthly water-balance model (MWBM) to demonstrate how the differences among these datasets result in disparate projections of snow loss and future changes in runoff. We apply the MWBM to six statistically downscaled datasets for 14 general circulation models (GCMs) from the Climate Model Intercomparison Program...

Simulation of hydrodynamic circulation in Barnegat Bay for the period from 03-01-2012 to 10-01-2012. The bathymetry of the model was based on the National Ocean Service Hydrographic Survey data, and updated with recent bathymetric measurements. At the landward end (western boundary), we specified point sources of freshwater in accordance with USGS streamflow measurements at 7 gauges, and a radiation boundary condition that allows tidal energy to propagate landward. On the seaward end, tidal water level and velocity amplitudes from the ADCIRC tidal database for the North Atlantic were applied. These were supplemented by the subtidal water level and subtidal barotropic velocity from the ESPreSSO model, which covers...
