There are multiple ongoing applied science technical projects and concepts for sagebrush SHC efforts that require additional capacity in the form of a dedicated full-time post-doctoral candidate to accelerate project delivery and follow up. For example, State of the Sagebrush Spatial Conservation Planning, WAFWA Conservation Design, NatureServe validation of FY21 Conservation Design, Incorporation of Ungulate Migration Areas into Conservation Design. Dr. Cross will support the WAFWA Sagebrush Conservation Design by co-leading the connectivity sub-group for FY22 and 23 with Dr. Zeller. This group will convene ecosystem experts to create spatial action maps for ecological connectivity among sagebrush core areas. This group will then evaluate the degree to which ecological connectivity captures functional connectivity of one high-priority species and one high-priority taxa group within the sagebrush biome: (1) greater sage-grouse and (2) migratory ungulates. Dr. Cross will also directly support the wildlife fire sub-group by serving as a spatial analyst to support analyses.
In the last two decades, the spruce beetle (Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby) has killed >1.5 million ha of forest in Southcentral Alaska, and more than 350,000 cumulative hectares have been impacted since 2016. We need to understand what landscape and climate conditions predispose forests to stand level mortality during beetle outbreaks in order to identify areas most prone to beetle disturbance and to support the development of appropriate climatic indices that can serve as early warning of outbreaks. This project will assess impacts of climate change on stream resources by considering the role of thermal heterogeneity and altered hydrologic regimes. The project will look at streams in Washington, Oregon, and California to develop a case study that stream stewards and conservation planners can use to assess vulnerability for Pacific salmon.Successful adaptation strategies for freshwater biota will consider how spatial patterns in water temperature may respond to climate change.
