Bottom altitudes of the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA) were compiled from interpretations of subsurface geophysical logs (log picks) at about 10,000 boreholes and wells located throughout the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) that were available from previous investigations. Five sources of the bottom altitude data are listed numerically in the Cross Reference section (below) and correspond with the Ref_code listed in the .shp dataset. Borehole geophysical data (log picks) were referenced (corrected) to the National Elevation Dataset (NED) 10-meter digital elevation model (DEM; https://nationalmap.gov/elevation.html). Log picks that required a DEM correction of less than 20 feet were retained for...

In cooperation with more than 10 local, State, and Federal stakeholders, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) is studying the aquifer systems in and near the Mississippi River alluvial plain (https://www2.usgs.gov/water/lowermississippigulf/map/index.html). This data release consists of continuous resistivity profiling (CRP) data collected by the USGS to characterize the electrical properties of geomorphological features in the part of the Mississippi River alluvial plain from Money, Miss. to Steiner, Miss. A total of 68 kilometers of multiple CRP profiles were obtained. The CRP data were collected by using the Ohmmapper TR-5 system (Geometrics, Inc., 2016) to determine if different geomorphological features...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired November 2018 to February 2019 along 16,816 line-kilometers (line-km) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP). Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different helicopter-borne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. Resolve frequency-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 100 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that...

Electrical resistivity results from four regional airborne electromagnetic (AEM) surveys (Burton et al. 2024, Hoogenboom et al. 2023, Minsley et al. 2021 and Burton et al. 2021) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) were combined by the U.S. Geological Survey to produce three-dimensional (3D) gridded models and derivative hydrogeologic products. These products were first published using data from the first two AEM regional surveys, labeled with the year “2020” (Minsley et al. 2021, Burton et al. 2021). The 3D resistivity models and select derivative products were later updated by incorporating additional data from the two subsequent AEM surveys, labeled with the year “2022” (Burton et al. 2024, Hoogenboom et...

This data release consists of two .csv files of inverted models of electrical resistivity created from the processed resistivity data in the accompanying two data releases: (Miller and Others, 2018) and (2018 Raw and Processed, in progress). During 2016, 17, and 18, the U.S. Geological Survey conducted continuous resistivity profiling along 15 rivers or lakes in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain of Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri to characterize streambed hydraulic conductivity values. These techniques characterize the near surface geomorphology of the streambed that controls the recharge to the alluvial aquifer. These data can be used to map changes in the lithology of the streambed and identify areas...

This data release has three components for each of the eight surveys that were conducted in 2018: 1) a geospatial dataset of the processed data; 2) tabular data of the processed waterborne resistivity profiling data and associated water-quality data; 3) tabular data of the raw waterborne resistivity data and associated water-quality data. In addition to the newly collected data from 2018, the waterborne resistivity data from 2016 (Miller and others, 2016) is included and has been re-processed to be consistent with the processing steps currently utilized and described herein. In fresh water aquifers, the geoelectric resistivity of earth materials commonly has a positive correlation with hydraulic conductivity (Faye...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired in late February to early March 2018 along 2,364 line-kilometers in the Shellmound, Mississippi study area. The Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (“alluvial aquifer”) is one of the most extensively developed aquifers in the United States. The alluvial aquifer is present at the land surface in parts of southeastern Missouri, northeastern Louisiana, western Mississippi, western Tennessee and Kentucky near the Mississippi River, and throughout eastern Arkansas. Historical (1940–2006) and recent (2019–20) aquifer-test datasets were compiled to model transmissivity and hydraulic conductivity of the alluvial aquifer from recent (2018–19) airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey data. This data release contains the aquifer-test and geophysical data along with computer codes written in Matlab version R2014a syntax used to...

In fresh water aquifers, the geoelectric resistivity of earth materials commonly has a positive correlation with hydraulic conductivity (Faye and Smith, 1994). Throughout 2017, continuous resistivity profiling data were collected, as a proxy for streambed hydraulic conductivity, along reaches of eight streams in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain of Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri. A total of...
