This project developed a series of maps depicting the distribution and probability of occurrence of marine birds in the northwestern Atlantic Ocean. The maps are intended to be used for informing decisions about siting offshore facilities; marine spatial planning; and other uses requiring maps of seabird distributions.

The White House Council for Environmental Quality has identified two national watersheds to pilot large-scale drought resiliency implementation. The Missouri Headwaters Basin within the GNLCC region and High Divide landscape is one of these national demonstration areas, and the GNLCC can advance its collective mission with this opportunity. By delivering science to management and building a learning network among watershed groups, this project will align the large-scale watershed management efforts of the GNLCC with the National Drought Resiliency Program (NDRP) and the Montana Department of Natural Resources (DNRC) to build drought resilience into this important northern Rocky Mountain landscape.FY2015and FY2016The...

The ShoreZone in the Classroom Curriculum Implementation project built upon the ShoreZone in the Classroom Pilot Networking Trip. Educational Consultant Marie Acemah liaised over email and in-person at the North Slope School District (NSBSD) Curriculum Camp in Barrow to develop Curricular Units that make ShoreZone available as an educational tool in NSBSD classrooms. This project resulted in two Units, specifically: 1) Coastal Ecosystems Unit; and 2) Documentary Filmmaking Summer Intensive Proposal. The ShoreZone tool is now available and accessible throughout the NSBSD district. The District and the Ilusagvik College are interested in partnering with ShoreZone to lead for-credit summer documentary film camps in...

The Gulf Coast Vulnerability Assessment (GCVA) used an expert opinion approach to qualitatively assess the vulnerability of four ecosystems: mangrove, oyster reef, tidal emergent marsh, and barrier islands, and a suite of wildlife species that depend on them. More than 50 individuals participated in the completion of the GCVA, facilitated via Ecosystem and Species Expert Teams. The GCVA made use of the Standardized Index of Vulnerability and Value Assessment (SIVVA) (Reece and Noss 2014) to provide an objective framework for evaluating vulnerability by guiding assessors through a series of questions related to the changes an ecosystem or species might experience due to climate change and other threats. Assessors...

The Alaska ShoreZone program has been able to document Arctic coastal biologyand dynamic processes through high resolution aerial imagery, videography, andground assessments: a snapshot in time of the ever changing Arctic coast. Some ofthe most spectacular of these images have been collected in this volume, CoastalImpressions: A Photographic Journey along Alaska’s Arctic Coast. Glance throughthese pages, study and ponder over them , then close your eyes and imagine.Wipe away your preconceived notions of the Arctic and learn about the gem thatis the true Arctic coast.
ShoreZone is a coastal habitat mapping and classification system in whichgeoreferenced aerial imagery is collected specifically for the interpretation andintegration of geological and biological features of the intertidal zone and nearshoreenvironment. This data summary report provides information on geomorphological andbiological features for 1,095 km of shoreline mapped from the 2013 coastalimaging survey of St. Lawrence Island. The habitat inventory is comprised of 1,994along-shore segments (units), averaging 550 m in length (note that the AK Coast1:63,360 digital shoreline shows this mapping area encompassing 908 km, butmapping data based on better digital shorelines represent the same area with 1,095km stretching...

Led by universities of the South Central CASC, this project builds on the successes of three prior workshops to mentor a cohort of early-career environmental professionals in the South Central U.S. to serve as part of the next generation of USGS leaders and partners. The workshop objectives are to: (1) develop the participants’ knowledge, leadership skills, and interdisciplinary collaboration with an eye toward filling future USGS (or partner organization) positions; (2) introduce participants to the goals, structure, and unique research-related challenges of the South Central CASC and the larger CASC network; (3) guide participants to discuss their research beyond their disciplinary niche and with managers across...

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) initiated the development of an Arctic Coastal Impressions booklet and photographic exhibit. In the exhibit, there were dozens of spectacular photos of the Arctic coastline. The images were collected along 10,000 km (6,000 mi) of shoreline in Alaska during 2012 and 2013. Many of the images were selected for their artistic composition – sculpted shapes, mosaics of colors or juxtaposition of odd features. They also provide insight into how coastal landforms develop and the significance of these features within the broader Arctic ecosystem. Each image has a story to tell and interpretive materials will accompany the collection.
