This release is an update to the online "Quaternary fault and fold database" for Washington State. The online database was last updated for Washington in 2014 – this 2020 update includes newly identified and modified traces and geometries for on-shore faults gleaned from new peer-reviewed studies and mapping of active faults within the state of Washington. These data contain lines representing the location of faults with known or suspected Quaternary (<1,600,000 yrs) activity in the state of Washington. This data was compiled in conjunction with the Washington State Geological Survey. Faults are attributed following the Quaternary fault and fold database attributes, including information such as age, slip sense,...

This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

Thirty-four ore, twenty-nine mine waste, seven host rock, two pegmatite, and one slag sample were collected from iron oxide-apatite (IOA) mines in the eastern Adirondack Highlands near Mineville and Ticonderoga, New York, from March 2016 to August 2018. The waste pile samples included twenty-five samples collected from rubble-sized mine waste piles and four samples from processed tailings piles. The ore from historic iron mines of the eastern Adirondack Highlands, New York, contain abundant quantities of rare earth element (REE)-bearing apatite crystals. These apatite crystals are especially enriched in Y, La, Ce, and Nd. In-ground ore, mine waste piles, and tailings piles could contain apatite...

Amur honeysuckle bush (Lonicera maackii) and Morrow's honeysuckle (Lonicera morrowii) are two of the most aggressively invasive species to become established throughout areas along the Blue River in metropolitan Kansas City, Missouri. These two large, spreading shrubs (locally referred to as bush honeysuckle in the Kansas City metropolitan area) colonize the understory, crowd out native plants, and may be allelopathic, producing a chemical that restricts growth of native species. Removal efforts have been underway for more than a decade by local conservation groups such as Bridging The Gap and Heartland Conservation Alliance, who are concerned with the loss of native species diversity associated with the spread...

The Neversink River watershed (above the Neversink Reservoir) has been a focus of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) research regarding stream geochemistry, acidification, and ecology dynamics for decades. In 2019, the Water Mission Area Next Generation Water Observing Systems Program augmented the existing stream gage network there, including instrumentation to specifically characterize various aspects of groundwater discharge to streams. An important control on the spatiotemporal dynamics of groundwater discharge can be stream valley corridor depth to bedrock, otherwise conceptualized as the thickness of unconsolidated sediments sediments over the contiguous bedrock interface. In June 2019, and November 2020, passive...

This shapefile contains summaries of habitat condition indices (HCI scores) from the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) 2010 National Assessments for 12 digit Hydrological Unit Codes (HUC12s) of the United States. Initial HCI scores were developed in three separate assessments (Conterminous U.S., Hawaii, and Alaska) due to differences in data availability across these regions. In the NFHAP 2010 Alaska assesment HCI values were already attributed to HUC12s. For this reason values for Alaska in this shapefile are identical to those represented in the Alaska assessment. To summarize data into HUC12s for the Conterminous United States and Hawaii a length-weighted average was used (i.e. the cumulative HCI score...

An upward-looking acoustic Doppler velocity meter (ADVM; Sontek XR, 1.5 MHz) was deployed in McAllister Creek at site MC2 (N 47° 05’ 43”/W 122° 43’ 38”) and continuously recorded water velocity, temperature and water level at 5-minute intervals from September 26, 2016 to October 14, 2016 (18 days), and at 15-minute intervals from December 2, 2016 to May 25, 2017 (174 days) except for the period of March 6 – 11, 2017 when the sensor was removed for maintenance and battery replacement. The site is tidally influenced and located approximately 0.7 km upstream from the mouth of McAllister Creek. The measurement averaging interval for the ADVM was 60 s. The blanking distance was set at 0.5 m and the cell end was set at...

The U.S. Geological Survey collected field spectra collected from three rivers in Alaska September 19–21, 2016, to support research on remote sensing of river discharge. Reflectance measurements were made from bridges across the Chena River, Salcha River, and Montana Creek using an Analytical Spectral Devices FieldSpec3 spectroradiometer operated in reflectance mode. The original *.asd files are provided in this data release. This data release supports the following article: Legleiter, C.J., Kinzel, P.J., and Nelson, J.M., 2017, Remote measurement of river discharge using thermal particle image velocimetry (PIV) and various sources of bathymetric information: Journal of Hydrology, v. 554, p. 490-506, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jhydrol.2017.09.004.

Note: The 2021 data release "Geospatial characterization of salt marshes for Massachusetts" is a more recent and comprehensive MA salt marsh dataset. (https://doi.org/10.5066/P97E086F) The salt marsh complex of Cape Cod National Seashore (CACO), Massachusetts, USA and approximal wetlands were delineated to smaller, conceptual marsh units by geoprocessing of surface elevation data. Flow accumulation based on the relative elevation of each location is used to determine the ridge lines that separate each marsh unit while the surface slope is used to automatically assign each unit a drainage point, where water is expected to drain through. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan,...

This layer represents fundamentally suitable and unsuitable habitat for freshwater mussels in the Meramec Basin as modeled by these authors on May 17, 2017 based on spatial data ranging from 1990 to 2014. Identification of habitat characteristics associated with the presence of freshwater mussels is challenging but crucial for the conservation of this declining fauna. Most mussel species are found in multi-species assemblages suggesting that physical factors influence presence similarly across species. In lotic environments, geomorphic and hydraulic characteristics appear to be important factors for predicting mussel presence. We used maximum entropy (MaxEnt) modeling to evaluate hydrogeomorphic variables associated...

The development and deployment of digital broadband seismographs provides the data required to rapidly assess earthquake size, determine source parameters and better characterize ground motions affecting earthquake hazard. The focus of regional moment tensor analysis is to estimate the moment magnitude, faulting parameters and source depth of earthquakes that are too small to be recorded teleseismically. Thus they have the potential of extending the earthquake catalog to magnitudes less than about M4-4.5. This data distribution provides the details required to critically review the resulting catalog, e.g., the waveforms used, processing parameters and velocity model. In addition the issue of the correct local magnitude...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the City of Shawnee, performed a detailed bathymetric survey of Shawnee Reservoir in 2016. Shawnee Reservoir (locally known as Shawnee Twin Lakes) is a man-made reservoir on South Deer Creek in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. The reservoir consists of two lakes connected by an equilibrium channel. The southern lake (Shawnee City Lake Number 1) was impounded in 1935 and the northern lake (Shawnee City Lake Number 2) was impounded in 1960. Shawnee Reservoir has a normal pool elevation of 1,069.0 feet above North American Vertical Datum of 1988. The auxiliary spillway, which defines the flood pool, is at an elevation of 1,075.0 feet above North American Vertical...

Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), downhole nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and manual permafrost-probe measurements were used to quantify permafrost characteristics along transects within several catchments in interior Alaska in late summer 2016 and 2017. Geophysical sites were chosen to coincide with additional soil, hydrologic, and geochemical measurements adjacent to various low-order streams and tributaries in a mix of burned and unburned watersheds in both silty and rocky environments. Data were collected in support of the Striegl-01 NASA ABoVE project, "Vulnerability of inland waters and the aquatic carbon cycle to changing permafrost and climate across boreal northwestern North America." Additional...
