This collection includes records for non-water wells in Indiana. Some County Strat Test (CST) wells are pretty shallow boreholes located within the state. Most are related to petroleum exploration and development efforts. Data includes completion reports, scout tickets, geophysical logs, sample descriptions and test results. Some records include small-scale geophysical and colored driller's logs. This collection is housed in the Records Center at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey, Indiana University, Bloomington, and is accessible by appointment.
In 1926, twenty-four companies from Indiana's Monroe and Lawrence counties joined their limestone quarrying and milling businesses to form the Indiana Limestone Company, or ILCO, that is still in operation today. Indiana Limestone refers to the building-stone facies of the Salem Limestone, later trademarked as “The Nation’s Building Stone,” and has been used extensively in building projects across the United States. Deposited approximately 340–335 million years ago in the middle Mississippian Period, it is exceptionally pure, well sorted, and occurs in thick beds that outcrop at or near the surface in Owen, Monroe, and Lawrence counties making the area especially well suited for profitable quarrying. In 2012,...
