Because Indiana has significant resources of coal, coal waste, and coal combustion products that are potential resources of critical minerals, this project developed a data preservation strategy for these coal related materials. Rare Earth Elements (REE) are the principal groups of critical minerals considered in this data preservation project, and our strategy for data preservation is to develop databases for individual groups of coal and coal-related materials. When completed, these databases will be combined under an inteactive application that will allow users to quickly locate selected sites and learn which data are available.
Inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) analysis data compiled using sample preparation procedures outlined by ASTM D2013/D2013M-18 and ASTM D6357, and using two independent sets of element standards for instrument calibration. Additional analysis methodologies are described in detail in the resulting publication Rare earth elements and yttrium in Pennsylvanian coals and shales in the eastern part of the Illinois Basin (Mastalerz et al., 2020).

This is a collection of over 14,000 physical sediment samples that accompany the gamma-ray logs. There are an estimated 2168 sample sets. The samples are stored in whirl bags labeled with the unique gamma-ray log number and depth of sample. The bags are stored in core boxes labeled with the unique gamma-ray number and range of depth. The number of samples per log primarily depends on the depth of the log. Due to poor original storage methods many samples were lost, therefore there are close to 800 gamma-ray logs without available physical samples.

Deep coal mines in Indiana plotted on 7.5-minute quadrangles defining mine extent, mine name, and sometime the coal seam.
Coal information for the state of Indiana. Mine reports are filed by county, 7.5-minute quadrangles contain rough mine extents, and coal production records gathered from various sources such as the US Office of Surface Mining and US Bureau of Mines contain mine and seam information. The information was gathered by the Indiana Geological Survey to use in their Coal Mine Directory.

The National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) began as a cooperative venture between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and State geological agencies in 1975 and focused on the stratigraphy and chemistry of coal. The current component databases of NCRDS include: USTRAT: Stratigraphic data related to coal (e.g. drill holes, measured sections) USCHEM (COALQUAL): Ultimate, proximate, and USGS-generated major-, minor-, and trace-element data for coal samples collected by USGS and States. USCOAL: A historical database of coal resource estimates compiled from publications prior to 1978 The collections referenced here are for historical purposes. The most current and up-to-date coal information is available electronically...

This collection contains hand samples gathered by IGWS field teams under the direction of State Geologist Charles Deiss (1945-1959) between 1947-1957 in support of research projects resulting in multiple Survey publications. The collection is organized by geologic age and contains materials from the Ordovician through Pennsylvanian periods.

This is a collection of digital gamma-logs for Indiana provided by the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) in .las and .pdf file format to the public at https://igs.indiana.edu/GeophysicalLogs/. The majority of these logs, 1993 to present, were taken digitally in the field. Anything before 1993 has been digitized. There are a total of 2795 logs available through the database.
