The South Central CASC supports Communities of Practice who are dedicated to finding solutions to the challenges of a changing climate. The Communities of Practice comprise researchers and stakeholders who share a common interest and choose to invest their time in learning from others and developing new collaborations. As of March 2021, the South Central CASC is actively supporting six Communities of Practice. The Communities of Practice members meet together regularly and engage in a formal check-in with South Central CASC staff on a quarterly basis. Researchers developed a custom model that integrates gSSURGO soil property data with condensed climate data from PRISM (e.g., drought index) to predict fraction of available water for a given soil. The model was trained with in situ measured soil moisture data (point measurements) and expanded to spatial extent with gSSURGO maps and PRISM data. The code for the model was developed using a combination of statistical and GIS languages (R, Matlab, ArcGIS, etc.).
Coral Ba/Ca is a proxy for seawater barium concentration that varies with upwelling, terrigenous input, and marine productivity whereas coral Sr/Ca varies with temperature. We examine monthly coral Ba/Ca and Sr/Ca before and during offshore oil exploration in a Siderastrea siderea coral from West Flower Garden Bank located on the continental shelf edge in the Gulf of Mexico. Coral Ba/Ca variations lack pulses driven by upwelling or river outflow and are not in sync with coral Sr/Ca that exhibit a different seasonal pattern. The Chestnut-collared Longspur (Calcarius ornatus; CCLO) is a grassland bird that winters in shortgrass prairies and desert grasslands of the South-Central and Southwest United States and the Chihuahuan Grasslands of North Central Mexico. This species feeds on native grass seeds in high-density flocks, uses cattle water tanks as its primary water source, and prefers areas recently burned, grazed, or mowed. The coastal prairie in Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge-Bahia Grande Unit in South Texas protects inland areas from storm surges and erosion while also serving as habitat for grassland-dependent species, such as the federally Endangered northern aplomado falcon (Falco femoralis septentrionalis). Past research indicates that each falcon breeding pair requires at least two thousand acres of open prairie with low woody plant densities to establish and occupy a territory. These data were generated with MAXENT 3.3.3k freeware (Phillips et al. 2011) using climate data and fire probability data for for three time periods: reference (1900-1929), mid-century (2040-2069) and late century (2070-2099), and community occurrence point data extracted from LANDFIRE Environmental Site Potential (ESP). Future time period data are from three global climate models (GCMs): CGCM, GFDL, and HadCM3. The South Central U.S. is one of the main agricultural regions in North America: annual agricultural production is valued at more than $44 billion dollars. However, as climate conditions change, the region is experiencing more frequent and severe droughts, with significant impacts on agriculture and broader consequences for land management. For example, in 2011 drought caused an estimated $7.6 billion in agricultural losses in Texas and an additional $1.6 billion in Oklahoma.
