Sediment cores extracted from three lake basins in Northeast Ohio reveal a marked transition from organic rich late Holocene muds to sediments richer in clastics in two of the basins, while the third and smallest lake basin contained no such transition. Analyses of sediment cores from Long Lake were conducted at the LacCore facilities in Minneapolis, Minnesota and revealed an increase in magnetic susceptibility and gamma density measurements, which are consistent with an influx of eroded soils into the aquatic system. A significant portion of the NO3 from agricultural fields that contaminates surface waters in the Midwest Corn Belt is transported to streams or rivers by subsurface drainage systems or "tiles." Previous research has shown that N fertilizer management alone is not sufficient for reducing NO3 concentrations in subsurface drainage to acceptable levels; therefore, additional approaches need to be devised. Flow alteration of streams from anthropogenic impacts is ubiquitous worldwide. In this paper, we examine flow alteration in a single watershed, the Wabash River and suggest potential impacts on aquatic assemblages. The Indicators of Hydrologic Alteration (IHA) software was used to evaluate hydrological variables generated from daily discharge data of 80 USGS gauging stations, during the past several decades. We used the approach of regressions of hydrological variables against time to identify hydrologic change. Trends in concentration and loads of acetochlor, alachlor, and metolachlor and their ethanasulfonic (ESA) and oxanilic (OXA) acid degradates were studied from 1996 through 2006 in the main stem of the Iowa River, Iowa and in the South Fork Iowa River, a small tributary near the headwaters of the Iowa River. Concentration trends were determined using the parametric regression model SEAWAVE-Q, which accounts for seasonal and flow-related variability.
