Data Basin is a science-based mapping and analysis platform that supports learning, research, and sustainable environmental stewardship. As environmental conservation problems become more serious and the demand to solve them grows more urgent, it is critical that science, practice, policy, and people are integrated in stronger ways. A team of scientists, software engineers, and educators at the Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) built Data Basin with the strong conviction that we can expand our individual and collective ability to develop sustainable solutions by empowering more people through access to spatial data, non-technical tools, and collaborative networks. The core of Data Basin is free and provides...

The Geomorphic Road Assessment and Inventory Package (GRAIP) is a process and a set of tools for analyzing the impacts of roads on forested watersheds. GRAIP combines a road inventory with a powerful GIS analysis tool set to predict sediment production and delivery, mass wasting risk from gullies and landslides, stream diversion potential, culvert maintenance, and fish passage at stream crossings. The road inventory protocol describes how to systematically field inventory a road system using GPS and automated data forms. Once downloaded, these data can be immediately run through a data quality checking and correction program. Quality checked data can then be analyzed in a program implemented in ARC-GIS. The program...

Linkage Mapper uses GIS maps of core habitat areas and resistances to identify and map linkages between core areas. Each cell in a resistance map is attributed with a value reflecting the energetic cost, difficulty, or mortality risk of moving across that cell. Resistance values are typically determined by cell characteristics, such as land cover or housing density, combined with species-specific landscape resistance models. As animals move away from specific core areas, cost-weighted distance analyses produce maps of total movement resistance accumulated. The tool identifies adjacent (neighboring) core areas and create maps of least-cost corridors between them. It then mosaics the individual corridors to create...

Seasonal change is important to consider when managing conservation areas at landscape-scales. The study of such patterns throughout the year is referred to as phenology. Recurring life-cycle events that are initiated and driven by environmental factors include animal migration and plant flowering. Phenological events, such as fall color change in deciduous forests, the first flowering in spring, and for those with allergies, the start of the pollen season, capture public attention. These events can impact our daily lives, provide clues to help understand and manage ecosystems, and provide evidence of how climate variability can impact the natural cycle of plants and animals. Phenological observations can be gathered...
The Western Landscapes Explorer is a natural resources digital library that provides access to information to evaluate large landscapes over time in the Western United States. It a llows users to learn about data created through the Integrated Landscape Asseessment Project http://westernlandscapesexplorer.info/LearnaboutIntegratedLandscapeAssessmentProject. The Gap Analysis Program (GAP) Land Cover Viewer displays data on the vegetation and land use patterns of the continental United States. The GAP Land Cover Data Version 2.2 provides detailed information on the vegetation of the United States using consistent satellite base data and classification systems. This allows data users to make conservation or land use planning decisions for the entire range of a habitat type across administrative boundaries. GAP Land Cover Data Version 2.2 combines ecological system data from previous GAP projects in the Southwest, Southeast, and Northwest United States with recently updated California data. For Alaska ,and areas of the continental United States, where ecological system-level...

The Gap Analysis Program's (GAP) Species Viewer allows users to explore, download, and create maps of vertebrate species ranges and models developed by GAP. The Viewer displays data on vertebrate species ranges and distribution models for the continental U.S. as well as Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. More specifically, species distribution models based on deductive modeling of habitat associations are displayed across entire species ranges for over 2000 species. The goal is to build species range maps and distribution models with the best available data for assessing conservation status, conservation planning, and research (e.g., climate change impacts). Ranges are represented by 12-digit...

The Coalbed Methane-Demineralization Treatment Cost (CBM-DTC) toolbox has been developed to predict the costs associated with treating Powder River Basin (PRB) coalbed methane (CBM) waters based on influent water characteristics, effluent water requirements, and the capabilities of selected technologies. The costs predicted by the toolbox should not be considered to be the exact costs, but approximations.

These geoprocessing tools were created to help support spatial analysis and other operations in Data Basin. These tools are intended to be deployed as geoprocessing services on an ArcGIS Server that also hosts map services (their data must be hosted locally). Within Data Basin, these services are accessed via server middleware to route to and control the number of jobs per ArcGIS server. Custom-built client code (HTML/JS/CSS) is used to provide the user interface to these tools, and manages generation of input parameters, and display of output results. Additional information about these tools is available in the code repository and full documentation. The primary use case of these tools initially is to enable...
The HCA toolkit is a GIS tool designed to support regional wildlife habitat connectivity analyses by automating the process of identifying habitat concentration areas (HCAs). HCAs are areas on the landscape between which patterns of connectivity are evaluated. The habitat areas identified by this toolkit may be used as an input for Linkage Mapper to model connectivity between HCAs. We developed this tool to support the 2010 Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group (WHCWG) statewide connectivity analysis, and are making it public for use in other wildlife connectivity assessments. The toolkit is available for download in a zip file that includes a user guide ,demo data, and scripts.

The DMPlanner is a web application for creating data management plans. DMPlanner is an open source, data-driven, client-side JavaScript tool that is easily configurable(via json config), can be used stand-alone or embedded, and has no server-side programming or database requirements. Uses the ExtJS framework, which is available under a GPL license and has a nice suite of ready to use widgets. The basic structure of the planner is Plan(s)->Section(s)->Groups(s)->Question(s). The planner may be configured by editing a JSON file, which is read by the application and defines the structure and, when saved by the web client, stores the data. Supports saving data to the browser cache, filesystem, or webservice (via Local...
