The LANDFIRE Program developed a rich suite of consistent spatial data sets for the entire United States. These spatial data sets were designed for very large landscape, regional and national applications. Two of these spatial layers are particularly unique and interesting, Departure and Uncharacteristic Vegetation. Departure is a metric that indicates how different the current composition and structure of vegetation is from estimated historical conditions. This metric is identical to Fire Regime Condition Class (FRCC) in LANDFIRE (V1.0), and is generally called FRCC in the fire literature (link to FRCC in LANDFIRE). A departure value is computed for each unique historical vegetation type (called Biophysical...

LandScope America—a collaborative project of NatureServe and the National Geographic Society—is a new online resource for the land-protection community and the public. By bringing together maps, data, photos, and stories about America’s natural places and open spaces, our goal is to inform and inspire conservation of our lands and waters.

The Department of Defense's (DoD) Natural Resources Conservation Program (NR Program) provides policy, guidance, and oversight for management of natural resources on nearly 25 million acres of military land, air, and water resources. The NR Program's goal is to ensure continued access to realistic habitat conditions to support the military's combat readiness mission, while simultaneously working to ensure the long term sustainability of our country's priceless natural heritage. The NR Program 's primary responsibilities are to: Oversee development and implementation of natural resource-related policy, guidance , procedures, and metrics; Ensure Military Service compliance with legislative obligations Executive...

Web Soil Survey (WSS) provides soil data and information produced by the National Cooperative Soil Survey. It is operated by the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and provides access to the largest natural resource information system in the world. NRCS has soil maps and data available online for more than 95 percent of the nation’s counties and anticipates having 100 percent in the near future. The site is updated and maintained online as the single authoritative source of soil survey information. Soil surveys can be used for general farm, local, and wider area planning. Onsite investigation is needed in some cases, such as soil quality assessments and certain conservation and engineering applications....

The Sevilleta LTER supports a long-term, integrated, interdisciplinary research program addressing key hypotheses on pattern and process in aridland ecosystems. Sevilleta LTER research includes studies in desert grassland and shrubland communities, and riparian and mountain forests emphasizing pulse driven processes in space and time. Key drivers (e.g., climate, fire, water, resource availability) govern dynamics in each landscape component. Our focus on how biotic and abiotic drivers affect spatial and temporal dynamics of aridland ecosystems allows us to conduct long-term research that addresses important basic theories and yet has significant relevance to regional, national and international priorities. The...

These heatmaps show a top 3 stressor or service, as ranked by participants, and the concentration of participants who reported as working in each municipality or county who also voted for that stressor or service across the landscape. This map shows the percentage of participants from each county and municipality who ranked Feral Hogs (Sus scrofa) as a top 3 ecosystem stressor in the Montane Invasive Animal category in their region. Symbology represents the percentage of participants with 0% = dark green, 0.0001 % - 24.99% = light green, 25% - 49.99% = yellow, 50% - 74.99% = orange, 75% - 100% = red. All counties and municipalities identified by participants as areas where they work were given a tally for each of...

Pima County makes extensive use of Geographical Information System (GIS) technology for making maps. For the Sonoran Desert Conservation Plan, this was an important technology for assembling the extensive existing data, both digital and non-digital, identifying critical gaps in the data and potential remedies, and providing a means for analyzing the information on biological and physical resources over the six million acre study area. SDCP Mapguide was created to display many of the natural resource GIS data layers, but Mapguide is being replaced with PimaMaps. You can use either to make your own overlays on aerial photos, line maps, or USGS topography. Customize your online map while panning and zooming on the...

Congress passed the State Wildlife Grants program (SWG) in 2001 in recognition of the need for funding of wildlife diversity programs. Congress mandated each state and territory to develop a Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy (now named Wildlife Action Plans) by 2005 in order to continue to receive federal funds through the SWG program. Nevada’s Wildlife Action Plan (WAP) was completed and approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 2005. Nevada’s WAP has served as a plan of action for state wildlife conservation and funding by targeting the species of greatest conservation need and the key habitats on which they depend. To date, NDOW has received over $11 million in federal dollars through...

This Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan (INRMP) is for Fort Bliss and the United States Department of the Army (U.S. Army) in accordance with the Sikes Act Improvement Act, Department of Defense (DoD) Instruction and Manual 4715.03 Natural Resources Conservation Program, U.S. Army Regulation 200-1, Environmental Protection and Enhancement, U.S. Army Strategy for the Environment: Sustain the Mission-Secure the Future. INRMP direction is by a recent series of Department of Defense and Department of the Army guidance memoranda on the Sikes Act and INRMPs. The purpose of this INRMP is to provide guidance for the implementation and management of natural resources on Fort Bliss during the 5-year period from...

Texas Tech University will conduct quantitative and predictive analysis of the connectivity of isolated desert “wetlands”, that include tinajas, the name for eroded pools in bedrock, for 20 wildlife species over the Sonoran desert ecoregion. Potential loss of wetlands due to climate change will also be studied to identify high value areas that can be prioritized for future restoration efforts and targeted for better management practices.Target species for landscape connectivity analysis include:Colorado River toad ( Incilius alverius )American bullfrog ( Lithobates catesbeianus )Chiricahua leopard frog ( Lithobates chiricahuensis )Lowland leopard frog ( Lithobates yavapaiensis )Couch’s spadefoot ( Scaphiopus couchii...

Selected GIS datasets for the Southwestern Region are available for download from this page. Use of most of these files requires GIS software such as ArcGIS, ArcView, ArcInfo or ArcExplorer. Most of these datasets are provided in ArcView shapefile (shp) format. ArcExplorer, a free, basic GIS software package available from ESRI will read the data in shapefile format (ESRI and the ESRI Logo are licensed trademarks of Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc.). Some datasets will also have related tables that can be used with the geographic data. Tabular data will be in Microsoft Excel format. All files have been compressed with zip and can be uncompressed with programs such as WinZip. Be aware that some of the...
