The Hawaii Forest Bird Survey (HFBS) systematically characterized plant and bird communities across transects spanning all major Hawaiian Islands except O‘ahu. This extensive dataset has now been organized into a database and associated geographic information system (GIS) layers. This baseline provides an opportunity to assess how forest ecosystems and their constituent bird and plant populations have changed over time. As part of the HaBiTATS (Hawaiian Biodiversity Trends Across Time and Space) project, a select area on Hawai‘i Island was surveyed in 2015 with the objective of demonstrating the potential of using the HFBS methodology to reassess the status of bird and plant communities across multiple geographic...

This data contains the height of shrubs found along transects on the south facing slopes of Santa Cruz Island, CA. It was used in the analysis for the Manuspcript "Long-term impacts of exotic grazer removal on native shrub recovery, Santa Cruz Island, California". These sites were sampled in 2004 and 2016 to gain a longer term view on native shrub reestablishment into exotic grasslands after exotic grazer removal.

This dataset (in ESRI file geodatabase format) contains inundation areas for various future scenarios of sea-level rise (SLR), groundwater rise, and storm waves at Midway Atoll in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. Four types of inundation scenarios are considered: (1) passive SLR, (2) passive SLR including groundwater rise, (3) wave-driven inundation during storm events, and (4) wave-driven inundation during storm events including groundwater rise. For each of these four scenarios, five different levels of SLR are considered: 0.00 m, +0.50 m, +1.00 m, +1.50 m, and +2.00 m. We considered each scenario at mean high water in order to predict inundation during the more damaging part of the tidal range. Each of the...
This project encompasses a set of vegetation surveys conducted at Pohakuloa Training Area in 2001. This website contains the survey data (including project area, species abundance and cover) and the final report.

Rapid ʽŌhiʽa Death (ROD) currently threatens ōhiʽa lehua (Metrosideros polymorpha) on Hawaiʽi Island. First identified in Puna in 2014, the disease has now spread island wide. Besides direct sampling of trees, environmental sampling could serve as an easier and broader strategy to detect Ceratocystis spp., the fungi causing ROD. Environmental sampling could also help monitor the effect of felling ROD infected trees. We developed Passive and Active Environmental Samplers and deployed them at a property in Puna, where both C. lukuohia, and C. huliohia had been detected, and where the land owner practiced the management method of felling infected trees. We set up 2 Active Environmental Samplers (modified mosquito traps...

Native and introduced forest birds were captured and then released across the Hawaiian Islands to acquire a blood sample for obtaining DNA and test for exposure to avian malaria (Plasmodium relictum). A total of 2,945 samples were collected and analyzed for avian malaria prevalence from 39 species captured at 66 sites from Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and Hawaii islands.
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) cover data were derived from the Bureau of Land Management’s Assessment Inventory, and Monitoring data and paired with geospatial data representing climate, weather, and disturbances. We derived covariates to capture both the climatic averages (1981-2010) that underlie long-term suitability, hereafter referred to as climate, and conditions during the year of observation, hereafter referred to as weather, that can drive annual variation in invasive grass cover (e.g., fall germination conditions were matched to cheatgrass cover sampled the following spring). Custom variables reflected cheatgrass natural history. Covariates describing geological context (e.g., aspect, elevation, soils),...

This data release includes data and metadata on litterfall rates, foliar nitrogen and carbon, grass biomass, soil nitrogen and carbon, and native outplant survival rates for an experiment that added large quantities of woody litter to a restoration forest in an attempt to lower soil nitrogen and exotic grass biomass. All sites were within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawaii Island. Broadly, this study looked at the ability to alter soil nitrogen cycling, exotic grass biomass and native outplant survival with large quantities of Metrosideros polymorpha litter in a forest dominated by Acacia koa.

This USGS data release consists of six data sets and accompanying metadata for a year-long study on the seasonal distribution and relative abundance of the southern house mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus in Kīpahulu Valley, Haleakalā National Park, critical habitat for two endangered Maui endemic forest birds. Culex quinquefasciatus is the vector of the avian malaria Plasmodium relictum, a key limiting factor of endemic Hawaiian forest birds. The main components of the study included: (1) adult mosquito monitoring to document the altitudinal distribution, seasonal occurrence, relative abundance, and trapping efficacy of Culex quinquefasciatus (Kīpahulu Valley, Maui, 1 file); (2) stream surveys to determine the larval...

Broadly, recovery of threatened and endangered species requires specific management actions by natural resource managers at a fine scale. We used a systematic conservation planning framework to outline conservation goals across multiple land-uses, including native habitat protection and identifying endangered species-specific recovery areas while minimizing intrusion on existing hunting areas on the island of Lanai. We used spatial prioritization tools to generate multiple scenarios where both conservation and hunting areas (deemed zones for analysis purposes) were delineated to meet land-use goals. These delineated areas will help land managers to minimize conflicts between uses for populations of non-native game...
