These data contain information about sub-lethal effects of cyanobacteria exposure on quagga mussel. Sub-lethal effects of cyanobacteria exposure on quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) sperm were evaluated. After inducing mussels to spawn using serotonin, sperm were collected and exposed to 11 cultures of cyanobacteria including Anabaena flos-aquae, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae, Dolichospermum lemmermanii, Gloeotrichia echinulata, five cultures of Microcystis aeruginosa, M. wesenbergii, and Planktothrix suspensa. Sperm motility, using endpoints of cumulative distance traveled and mean velocity, was calculated for a minimum of 10 individual sperm using a novel optical biotracking assay method. The distance...

Lake Erie Biological Station (LEBS), located in Sandusky, Ohio, is a field station of the USGS Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC). LEBS is the primary federal agency for applied fisheries science excellence in Lake Erie. Since 2004, LEBS has participated in a collaborative, multiagency effort to assess forage fish populations in the western basin of Lake Erie. Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. The objectives of this survey were to provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to...

Data were collected as part of a study to identify sources of E. coli contamination at several beaches located in the Grand Calumet River Areas of Concern, located in northern Indiana on Lake Michigan, as well as in Illinois and Wisconsin on Lake Michigan. Water samples were collected at each site in Indiana three times a week for thirteen weeks and at each site in Illinois and Wisconsin. All samples were analyzed for E. coli bacteria (an indicator bacteria for fecal contamination) and species-specific molecular markers (microbial source tracking, MST), including human, gull, and dog. Presence of MST markers indicates a fecal source at that location associated with the target animal. Field conditions were recorded...

Impacts of dreissenid mussels (Dreissena spp.) on Great Lakes ecosystems are well documented, and a better understanding of mechanisms that cause variation in mussel abundance is needed. An outstanding question is how much mussel biomass is consumed by fish predation. A significant difficulty for investigating mussel consumption by fish is that mussels in stomachs are often a mix of crushed shell and flesh. Here, we provide information on the relationship between shell-and-flesh dry weight measurements and flesh-only dry weight of two species of dreissenid mussel, quagga (Dreissena rostiformis bugensis) and zebra (Dreissena polymorpha), to be used in formulating conservative estimates of flesh-only dry weight in...

This is a tabular data set that contains morphological and experimental data for a study testing if silver stage American eel respond to each other's odor. Inside a laboratory flume, downstream-swimming eels were exposed to both live (putative attractant) and dead (putative repellent) conspecific washings to determine whether their trajectory of downstream movement, level of activity, or time spent inside targeted areas of the arena changed after exposure. One CSV file contains eel morphological data and the other CSV file describes behavioral responses.

The USGS Lake Erie Biological Station’s East Harbor sampling program began in 1961 with the commissioning of the research vessel Musky II. It is the longest known continuous trawl survey in Lake Erie. In addition to spanning over 50 years, the data series is unique for three prominent design elements: 1) sampling was conducted at three depth strata; 2) replicate trawl samples were collected at each depth stratum; and 3) sampling was conducted during both day and night. Unlike other trawl series collected in Lake Erie, and throughout the Great Lakes, the East Harbor program is the only one to combine these sampling practices in a single survey. In 2012, the original vessel used since the inception of the East Harbor...

Data are from biological and physical environmental assessments conducted during 2019 in the Maumee River, Ohio. Sites were located from river kilometer 24 to 11. Water quality parameters, fishes, invertebrates, and river channel characteristics were assessed during 2019 from May-September. Previously established standardized sampling methods were used during all assessments.
Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength. A systematic grid sampling approach with 41 stations was sampled via bottom trawl during June (Spring) and September (Autumn), starting in 2013. This data release adds 2022 data to...

Bacteria were isolated from seeds of non-native Phragmites australis (haplotype M) then representatives were evaluated for their capacities to become intracellular in root cells, and their effects on: 1.) germination rates and seedling growth, 2.) susceptibility to damping-off disease, and 3.) mortality and growth of competitor plant seedlings (dandelion (Taraxacum officionale F. H. Wigg) and curly dock (Rumex crispus L.)). The experiments included the following assessments of Phragmites-associated bacteria (Pseudomonas spp, strains Sandy LB4 (Pseudomonas fluorescens) and West 9 (Pseudomonas sp.)): capacity for plant growth promotion (using Poa annua seeds), Poa annua and Phragmites australis seed germination and...

Subadult and smolt behavioral data were compiled by Ali Mokdad from Trevor Pitcher's lab at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Data are comprised of fish reactions in choice flume video data (attractance/avoidance) collected by Jeremy Kraus at Tunison Lab of Aquatic Science, August 2021 and February 2020 respectively. Atlantic salmon were exposed/not exposed to imprinting chemical (morpholine) through early life stages and later tested based on their treatment to see how individuals react to the presence of exposure chemicals during subsequent life stages. These data show how the adult stage Atlantic salmon of this study ((non exposed (control) and treatment (morpholine exposed)) react to timed exposure...

This dataset contains all the layers associated with U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative for the Green Bay Restoration Assessment (GBRA) which aims to identify and rank coastal areas with the greatest potential for wetland habitat restoration. Each layer has a unique contribution to the identification of restorable wetlands. The 7 parameters (Parameter 0: Mask, Parameter 1: Hydroperiod, Parameter 2: Wetland Soils, Parameter 3: Flowlines, Parameter 4: Conservation and Recreation Lands, Parameter 5: Impervious Surfaces, and Parameter 6: Land Use) and Index Composite directly correlate to areas that are recommended for restoration. The dikes, degree flowlines,...
An experienced team of wetland ecologists, geographers, and software engineers used a geodesign process to develop and host a web-based geospatial application that will support the identification and restoration of potential coastal wetlands (i.e., areas that could be restored to coastal wetlands if hydrologically connected to the Great Lakes) along the U.S. coast of the Great Lakes. Techniques, data types, and analysis approaches used in the recent Western Lake Erie Restoration Assessment (WLERA) model are being extended to include other priority coastal areas of the Great Lakes. The first phase of the work produced three restoration assessments for the pilot area identified by the LCC Coastal Working Group (U.S....
