The California Basin Characterization Model (CA-BCM 2014) dataset provides historical and projected climate and hydrologic surfaces for the region that encompasses the state of California and all the streams that flow into it (California hydrologic region ). The CA-BCM 2014 applies a monthly regional water-balance model to simulate hydrologic responses to climate at the spatial resolution of a 270-m grid. The model has been calibrated using a total of 159 relatively unimpaired watersheds for the California region. This archive contains fine spatial-resolution translations of 112 contemporary climate projections over the contiguous United States. The original projections are from the World Climate Research Programme's (WCRP's) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3) multi-model dataset, which was referenced in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report.

These data were originally downloaded from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) web site http://www.nrel.gov/gis/data_solar.html in units of kilowatt-hours per square meter per day and were converted to Langleys per day. 1 Langley per day = 1 calorie per square centimeter per day. or 1 Langley per day = 0.01163 kilowatt-hour per square meter per day. NREL has several different values of solar radiation available, the "global horizontal" data is what is represented by this service. "Global horizontal" means on a surface perpendicular to the radius -- i.e. a horizontal plate, wherever on the Earth you are measuring (or using) it. These daily gridded observations at 1/8 degree spatial resolution (about 12 km) are a baseline dataset to be compered to downscaled climate predictions. The grid used is the same as has been used by other 1/8th degree spatial resolution downscaling projects. The updated data were processed exactly as in the reference above with the single exception of the precipitation time-of-observation adjustment. For this updated dataset, if a meteorological station has a time of observation before noon, the precipitation is assigned to the prior day, otherwise no adjustment is made. This archive contains daily downscaled meteorological and hydrological projections for the Columbia Basin in the United States at 1/16-deg resolution utilizing 9 different downscaling methods. The downscaled meteorological variables are maximum/minimum temperature(tasmax/tasmin), precipitation amount(pr), downward shortwave solar radiation(rsds), wind speed(was), and specific humidity(huss). This data set provides Daymet Version 3 model output data as gridded estimates of daily weather parameters for North America and Hawaii: including Canada, Mexico, the United States of America, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. The island areas of Hawaii and Puerto Rico are available as files separate from the continental land mass. Daymet output variables include the following parameters: minimum temperature, maximum temperature, precipitation, shortwave radiation, vapor pressure, snow water equivalent, and day length. Clouds often come in contact with vegetation (often named fogs) within a certain elevation range on Hawai‘i’s mountains. Propelled by strong winds, cloud droplets are driven onto the stems and leaves of plants where they are deposited. Some of the water that accumulates on the plants in this way drips to the ground, adding additional water over and above the water supplied by rainfall. Prior observations show that the amount of cloud water intercepted by vegetation is substantial, but also quite variable from place to place. The permafrost module of the Alaska Integrated Ecosystem Model (AIEM) is used to establish high spatial resolution scenario of changes in permafrost characteristics in the Alaskan Arctic in response to projected climate change. Retrospective modeling was performed for the 1901-2009 period using the high resolution CRU TS3.1 climate forcing from the Scenario Network for Alaska Planning (SNAP). To predict future changes in permafrost in natural conditions, a five model composite climate forcing (2006-2100) under the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 4.5 scenario is utilized. This archive contains daily statistically downscaled climate projections for the United States and southern Canada east of the Rocky Mountains at 0.1 degree resolution. Further documentation is available here: http://djlorenz.github.io/downscaling2/main.html The downscaled variables are daily precipitation, daily maximum temperature and daily minimum temperature. The downscaling is based on 13 models from Phase 3 of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP3), a critical source of data to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4).

The goal of this project was to (1) develop consistent historical and future downscaled climate and hydrologic data and projections using the same methodology for several major river basins in the western United States (Columbia, upper Missouri, upper Colorado, and Great Basins) and (2) summarize that information in forms consistent with the needs of the funding agencies. This report describes where to get the information developed as well as the methods, results obtained, uses of and uncertainties associated with the data and projections.

This collection contains three statistically downscaled time series (datasets) for the Red River Basin (South Central U.S.), and one dataset used as historical observations. In particular, three different Global Climate Models (MPI-ESM-LR, CCSM4 and MIROC5) were downscaled using three different quantile mapping methods (CDFt, EDQM and BCQM). We do not recommend the use of the BCQM method, as the CDFt method is considered an improvement of it. The datasets created using the BCQM method are published as a demonstration of the risks of using flawed methods. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was used to downscale select general circulation models (GCMs) that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). WRF was used to produce output at a 2-km horizontal resolution for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands by applying a 30-km/10- km/2-km one-way nest. Data from each nest was archived. Two twenty-year time slices from two CMIP5 GCMs were dynamically downscaled using WRF, a historical time slice (1985-2005) and a future time slice (2040-2060).
