Water velocities were measured in the Des Plaines River from approximately river mile 286 to river mile 284 on October 19–21, 2015 using Teledyne Rio Grande 1200 kHz acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCP). The data were georeferenced with differential GPS receivers with submeter accuracy. These velocity data were collected in support of the US Army Corps of Engineers Great Lakes and Mississippi River Interbasin Study (GLMRIS), and

Five Turner Designs C3 submersible fluorometers were deployed in the Des Plaines River downstream of the Brandon Road Lock and Dam (BRLD) near Rockdale, IL to measure Rhodamine WT dye concentrations during a U.S. Geological Survey dye study conducted on October 20-21, 2015. The lock chamber at BRLD was dyed with 4 liters of Rhodamine WT dye during a routine filling procedure. Measurements of dye concentration downstream collected by these instruments capture the leakage of dyed water from the lock, the pulse of dyed water exiting the lock during routine emptying of the lock, and the mixing of the dyed water downstream during a 17-minute flushing operation of the lock. The fluorometers were installed on both sides...

A boat equipped with a differential Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver (Hemisphere Crescent A100 Smart Antenna) and a Turner Designs C3 submersible fluorometer was used to survey the spatial distribution of the Rhodamine WT dye in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) throughout the study area. The fluorometer was installed in a fixed, downlooking orientation approximately 1 foot below the water surface. Fluorometer readings were taken at a frequency of 1 per second. Data were acquired on a personal computer running the Turner Designs C-FINS software extension for ArcGIS 10. This data acquisition software allows the C3 data to be georeferenced and plotted in real time as color-coded concentrations on...

Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) data were collected at multiple transects in the Calumet River mouth on May 12, 2015. Data were reviewed and processed to compute discharge in the river under unsteady conditions using the native data collection software (RDI WinRiver II) and the QRev USGS software for ADCP discharge review.

The data collection for the concrete-walled channel downstream from the Brandon Road Lock and Dam near Joliet, Illinois occurred in May 2014 Five pounds per square inch (lb/in2) was used as a threshold water pressure value for this study as this value incorporates fish behavior and structural integrity considerations. The Brandon Road study evaluated the performance of two different water gun configurations within the concrete-walled channel downstream from the lock with depths ranging from 12-15 feet. Data from a single 80 cubic inch (in³) water gun produced a roughly cylindrical 5 lb/in2 pressure field 20 feet in radius, oriented vertically, with the radius decreasing to less than 15 feet at the surface. A combination...

These data were collected in support of a multi-agency effort to evaluate the feasibility of using carbon dioxide to create a barrier and prevent upstream passage of invasive fish through navigational locks. The auxiliary lock at Lock and Dam 14 on the Mississippi River near Pleasant Valley, Iowa, was chosen for a field-scale trial of the carbon dioxide barrier to be conducted in 2018. In preparation for this trial, the mixing in the lock chamber during routine operations and the fate and transport of lock water released to the pool downstream was studied using a dye tracer. In June 2017, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) performed two injections of Rhodamine WT dye into the auxiliary lock chamber as the lock was...

This data release presents a peak-flow frequency analysis for USGS 05494300 Fox River at Bloomfield, Iowa, based on methods described by Eash and others (2013) (https://pubs.usgs.gov/sir/2013/5086/). The methods are used to provide estimates of peak-flow quantiles for 50-, 20-, 10-, 4-, 2-, 1-, 0.5-, and 0.2-percent annual exceedance probabilities (AEPs). The results are presented in two text files (peak flow specification file: 05494300_ffa_2018.psf; WATSTORE file: 05494300_ffa_2018_WATSTORE.txt), and an excel spreadsheet (05494300_ffa_2018.xlsx).

Please see the detail in new data release at https://doi.org/10.5066/P146RBHK The text file "Air temperature.txt" contains hourly air temperature data in degrees Fahrenheit and associated data-source flags from January 1, 1948, to September 30, 2018. The primary data for water year 2018 (a water year is the 12-month period, October 1 through September 30, designated by the calendar year in which it ends) were downloaded from the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) (Argonne National Laboratory, 2018) and processed following the guidelines documented in Over and others (2010). In 2016, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers undertook a large-scale interagency field study to determine the influence of commercial barge vessels on the efficacy of the Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) in preventing fish passage. This study included a series of trials in which a tow, consisting of a tug vessel and six fully-loaded barges, transited the EDBS in both upstream-bound and downstream-bound directions. The U.S. Geological Survey measured velocity profiles during these trials using synchronized velocity probes mounted on both the barge and the West canal wall. SonTek Argonaut SW 3,000 kHz acoustic...

The U.S. Geological Survey monitors water surface flow reversals, commercial vessel traffic, and temperature and specific conductance in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Electric Dispersal Barrier System, EDBS, on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Chicago, Illinois. This data release is the 2018 water year summary of the EDBS monitoring data. Water surface flow reversals at the EDBS are monitored using surface velocity radar. Commercial vessel traffic patterns through the EDBS are documented using a motion-activated video camera. Temperature and specific conductance are reported in near real-time from USGS sensors installed just downstream of the EDBS.

These data were collected as part of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) project template 678-1 entitled 'Evaluate immediate and long-term BMP effectiveness of GLRI restoration efforts at urban beaches on Southern and Western Lake Michigan'. This project is evaluating the effectiveness of projects that are closely associated with restoration of local habitat and contact recreational activities at two GLRI funded sites in Southern Lake Michigan and one non-GLRI site in Western Lake Michigan. Evaluation of GLRI projects will assess whether goals of recipients are on track and identify any developing unforeseen consequences. Including a third, non-GLRI project site in the evaluation allows comparison between...
