Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired November 2018 to February 2019 along 16,816 line-kilometers (line-km) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP). Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different helicopter-borne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. Resolve frequency-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 100 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that...

This dataset contains surface-water-altitude (SWA) data from streamgages that were used or considered (indicated by the field USE_2020) to create a potentiometric-surface map for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA) for spring 2020. The SWA data was referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88). The streamgages are measured continuously. The streamgage measurement that was used was from early April 2020 and is an estimate of the groundwater altitudes (GWAs) at the gage location. The resultant potentiometric-surface contours and raster represents the generalized central tendency for spring 2020, but it would not be useful for some purposes, such as for calibration of a groundwater-flow...
Concern about sustained availability of fresh groundwater for agricultural use in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) mounts as groundwater levels decline. We evaluate the elasticities of demand for groundwater and other agricultural inputs, as well as the overall and output-specific economies of scale for four major irrigated commodities (rice, corn, soybeans, and cotton) in the MAP region. Additionally, we investigate the impacts of two groundwater management policy scenarios, including increasing pumping cost and groundwater use restrictions, on irrigation behavior. The results show price elasticity of demand for groundwater to be −0.13−0.13, indicating that it is inelastic, and an increased cost of pumping...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired in late February to early March 2018 along 2,364 line-kilometers in the Shellmound, Mississippi study area. Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different helicopter-borne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. RESOLVE frequency-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 100 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that detects...

A potentiometric-surface map for spring 2018 was created for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial (MRVA) aquifer, which was referenced to the North American Vertical Datum of 1988 (NAVD 88), using most of the available groundwater-altitude data from wells and surface-water-altitude data from streamgages. Most of the wells were measured annually or one time, after installation, but some wells were measured more than one time in a year and a small number of wells were measured continually. Streamgages were typically operated continuously. The potentiometric-surface map for 2018 was created as part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water Availability and Use Science Program to support investigations that characterize...
Note: this data release has been revised. Find the updated version at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9JMO9G4. This data release contains monthly and annual water-use estimates from the Aquaculture and Irrigation Water-Use Model version 1.0 for the Mississippi Alluvial Plain, April 1999 to October 2017. Aquaculture and irrigation estimates contained in this data release are representative of groundwater withdrawal for six different categories: aquaculture, cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, and all other crops. Contained in this data release are monthly and annual estimates by water-use category and monthly and annual total estimates. Monthly and annual totals are a summation of water use for aquaculture, cotton, corn, rice,...
The annual water-use rasters estimate the total amount of groundwater used for aquaculture and irrigation purposes within the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. This dataset contains 19 annual water-use rasters that are totals of 6 different use categories: aquaculture, cotton, corn, rice, soybeans, and all other crops. Units are in cubic meters per square mile.

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM), magnetic, and radiometric data were acquired November 2019 to March 2020 along 24,030 line-kilometers (line-km) over the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP). Data were acquired by CGG Canada Services, Ltd. with three different airborne sensors: the CGG Canada Services, Ltd. TEMPEST time-domain AEM instrument that is used to map subsurface geologic structure at depths up to 300 meters (m), depending on the subsurface resistivity; a Scintrex CS-3 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (hundreds of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations; and a Radiation Solutions RS-500 spectrometer that detects the...
Since the 1940's, commercial, academic and government hydrologists have used aquifer tests to estimate the hydrogeologic properties of an aquifer near test wells. Results from these tests are recorded in various files, databases, reports, and scientific publications. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMG) is aggregating all aquifer test results from Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee into a single dataset that is publicly available in a machine-readable format. This dataset contains information and results from 2,245 aquifer tests compiled for aquifers located in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Descriptive statistics for the December 2020...

This data release provides 64 forecasted water budget simulations for the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System (MERAS) during the period 2019 to 2055. Gridded daily data (1-kilometer resolution) include net infiltration (potential groundwater recharge), rejected net infiltration, interception, runoff, runoff outside (runoff that cannot be routed downslope), irrigation, actual evapotranspiration, minimum and maximum temperatures, and gross precipitation. The gridded representations of water budget components are output from USGS Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model (Nielsen and Westenbroek, 2023; Westenbroek and Nielsen, 2023) simulations in netcdf4 format, and all water budget components are in inches. The precipitation,...
This data release includes four sets of gridded annual net infiltration (groundwater recharge) and irrigation water use data sets for the Mississippi Embayment Regional Aquifer System (MERAS).Also included are gridded water balance component data sets of precipitation, runoff, actual evapotranspiration, and soil-water storage for 2000 to 2018. The net infiltration, irrigation, runoff, actual evapotranspiration, and soil-water storage data sets are outputs from simulations done with the USGS Soil-Water-Balance (SWB) model (version 2; Westenbroek and others, 2018). The precipitation data was used as input for the SWB model application and is derived from DayMet version 3 (Thornton and others, 2018) and Livneh and...
