The capacity of ecosystems to provide services such as carbon storage, clean water, and forest products is determined not only by variations in ecosystem properties across landscapes, but also by ecosystem dynamics over time. ForWarn is a system developed by the U.S. Forest Service to monitor vegetation change using satellite imagery for the continental United States. In this video presentation, Dr. David Culver of American University provides an overview of the unique cave and karst ecosystems of the Appalachians. The Appalachian karst ecosystems have the highest number of aquatic and terrestrial cave-limited species in the United States. Terrestrial species richness in northeast Alabama and central Tennessee make these systems the “Amazon rain forest” of subterranean biodiversity in the nation. Dr. Culver provides a review of the reasons for conservation concern, the rarity and uniqueness of the cave fauna, and details the ecosystem services of these systems.
The entire stream classification dataset is available for download as a zip file.Included in the download, is a shapefile of all of the stream flow lines within the study area. Information about each of the features is available in the attribute table of the shapefile. An Excel file is included which describes each of the fields in the attribute table. Although a number of nationally recognized terrestrial community classifications exist, currently there is no national or international standard for classifying aquatic communities or ecosystems. Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.
