Potential Evapotranspiration (PET): These data represent decadal mean totals of potential evapotranspiration estimates (mm). The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named pet_mean_mm_decadal_CRU_Historical_annual_1930-1939.tif represents the decade spanning 1930-1939. The data were generated by using the Hamon equation and output from a statistically downscaled version of the Hadley Centre’s CRU TS3.0 observational dataset. Data are at 2km x 2km resolution, and all data are stored in geotiffs. Calculations were performed using R 2.12.1 and 2.12.2 for Mac OS Leopard, and data were formatted into geotiffs using the raster and rgdal packages. Users are reminded that the PET estimates...
These raster datasets represent historical stand age. The last four digits of the file name specifies the year represented by the raster. For example a file named Age_years_historical_1990.tif represents the year 1990. Cell values represent the age of vegetation in years since last fire, with zero (0) indicating burned area in that year. Files from years 1860-2006 use a variety of historical datasets for Boreal ALFRESCO model spin up and calibration to most closely match historical wildfire dynamics.
We mosaicked twelve LandSat-8 OLI satellite images taken during the summer of 2014, which were used in an object based image analysis (OBIA) to classify the landscape. We mapped seventeen of the most dominant geomorphic land cover classes on the ACP: (1) Coastal saline waters, (2) Large lakes, (3) Medium lakes, (4) Small lakes, (5) Ponds, (6) Rivers, (7) Meadows, (8) Coalescent low-center polygons, (9) Low-center polygons, (10) Flat-center polygons, (11) High-center polygons, (12) Drained slope, (13) Sandy barrens, (14) Sand dunes, (15) Riparian shrub, (16) Ice, and (17) Urban (i.e. towns and roads). Mapped products were validated with an array of oblique aerial/ground based photography (Jorgenson et al., 2011)...
The American Tree Sparrow is a common breeding bird of boreal and tundra dominated habitatsin northern Canada and Alaska. This species breeds in open scrubby areas; willow, birch, andalder thickets, stunted spruce, open tundra with scattered shrubs, often near lakes or bogs(Naugler 1993). In summer American Tree Sparrows consume a wide variety of animal prey(primarily both larval and adult insects). Alaskan birds are short-distance migrants and winter intemperate North America (Naugler 1993). This species’ population is very large (>10 million)although the overall population has undergone a small (statistically insignificant) decrease overthe last 40 years in North America (Butcher and Niven 2007).
Regional map showing the location of the TEON focal watersheds (colored polygons). White circles denote the locations of proposed observation sites. Collectively, these watersheds sample the major ecoregions (Nowacki et al., 2001) represented within the Alaska portion of the Arctic LCC.

Academics & scientific researchers,
The Beaufort Sea coast in arctic Alaska and neighboring northern Canada has recently experienced extreme and accelerated climate change, including a dramatic reduction in summer sea ice (Gildor and Tziperman 2003, Holland et al. 2006). This absence of ice allows increased wind and wave energy to directly affect the coast, resulting in island and mainland flooding, coastal erosion, and further movement of barrier islands and beaches. The period each year in which the arctic is free of summer ice is increasing and is predicted to increase non-linearly in the future. This suggests a “tipping point” has been reached, producing internal feedback mechanisms that will further accelerate coastal change (Comiso et al., 2008).These...

The ALCC has asked the U.S. Institute for Environmental Conflict Resolution (U.S. Institute) to assist them in engaging a third-party neutral facilitator who can work with the steering committee to identify key landscape scale resource management needs common to many of the ALCC partners. The overall goals of this project are twofold. One is to identify key future landscape scale resource management and science needs that are common to many of the ALCC partners, and in doing so, increase understanding of future landscape scale information needs among the ALCC steering committee members.

Map of the Upper Koyukuk River Area and location of proposed observation sites (numbered circles). This large area drains the southern Brooks Range ecoregion and extends downstream into the Kobuk Ridges and Valleys outside of the Arctic LCC boundary. Compared to other sites in TEON, these rivers are larger basins and reflect higher relief landscapes. Inset shows the location of the seven TEON focal watersheds. Image by Arctic LCC staff.

This raster, created in 2010, is output from the Geophysical Institute Permafrost Lab (GIPL) model and represents simulated mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) in Celsius, averaged across a decade, at the base of active layer or at the base of the seasonally frozen soil column. The file name specifies the decade the raster represents. For example, a file named MAGT_1980_1989.tif represents the decade spanning 1980-1989. Cell values represent simulated mean annual ground temperature (degree C) at the base of the active layer (for areas with permafrost) or at the base of the soil column that is seasonally frozen (for areas without permafrost). If the value of the cell is negative, the area has permafrost and the...

This dataset contains rasters that represent mapped habitat suitability indices for 8 shorebird species, a raster that represents mean habitat suitability indices for all 8 species, and a raster that represents the number of species in which the habitat suitability index exceeded the selected threshold value for each pixel. The shorebird species used for this modeling effort are American Golden-Plover [AMGP], Black-bellied Plover [BBPL], Dunlin [DUNL], Long-billed Dowitcher [LBDO], Pectoral Sandpiper [PESA], Red Phalarope [REPH], Red-necked Phalarope [RNPH], and Semipalmated Sandpiper [SESA].

Our overarching questions are: (1) How much of the river water and water-borne constituents (i.e. sediment, nutrients, organic matter) from the Jago, Okpilak and Hulahula rivers are coming from glacier melt? (2) How do inputs from these rivers affect the downstream ecosystems? (3) How will loss of glaciers affect these ecosystems? The study will help elucidate how inputs from glacier-dominated arctic rivers differ from unglaciated rivers, through a combination of ground work, boat work, and remote sensing. In Phase One of this study, we intend to explore the relationship between glaciers and coastal ecosystems. Our goal in this phase-one study is not to answer these questions conclusively but rather improve our...

The USGS and Arctic National Wildlife Refuge Staff operate and maintain a streamgage at Hulahula River near Kaktovik, Alaska. Data from this station is necessary to complement glacier mass-balance studies and provide information necessary to project stream flow regimes under various scenarios of climate change. This project includes operation, acquiring real-time data, analysis of the data, and internet access. The gauge continues to operate as of 2017.
