Nutrient Reduction is an indicator of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. This indicator was chosen as a targetable, important feature of the MLI goals that will be used to track conditions over time and prioritize areas for conservation. Indicators were defined through elicitation and prioritization exercises with federal and state participants. Criteria for the indicators includes 1) actionable, 2) measurable, 3) relevant to multiple groups across the region, and/or 4) representative...

This two-page document is a summary of the USFWS decision support framework effort as of August 2023. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) decision support framework for conservation introductions (framework) aims to foster inclusive, transparent and defensible decision making about when to use conservation introductions as a strategy for preventing species extirpation or extinction, re-establishing an ecological function lost through extinction, or directing ecosystem change toward a state that better supports conservation goals. The framework is being developed for use by the USFWS in HawaiĘ»i, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, Federated States...

ABSTRACT: This project will place the PNW Coast LCD on a pathway for successfully engaging private landowners and increase the likelihood that the products of the LCD effort will be used to drive conservation in the region for years to come. The first goal is to develop a logical, sequential, effective strategy to engage private lands in the various facets and phases of the LCD effort. Having a jointly-developed landowner engagement strategy recognizes that this landscape design process should be conducted in close partnership with those whom we rely on to continue producing environmental values. The second goal is to implement initial steps of the landowner engagement strategy. These early implementation steps...
The project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” assessed terrestrial ecological systems in terms of suitability as broadly defined habitats supporting species identified in wildlife action plans. Assessment of three Southern Yellow Pine Forest classes (Longleaf Pine Flatwoods, Longleaf Pine Woodland, Shortleaf/Loblolly Pine Woodland) included threshold values associated with landscape configuration and patch size. Per-pixel assessment of these thresholds required a layer describing pine forest areas in the landscape. This layer was created by selecting the three pine classes mentioned above, along with Managed Forest, from the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined...
