The project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” assessed terrestrial ecological systems in terms of suitability as broadly defined habitats supporting species identified in wildlife action plans. Assessment of three Southern Yellow Pine Forest classes (Longleaf Pine Flatwoods, Longleaf Pine Woodland, Shortleaf/Loblolly Pine Woodland) included threshold values associated with landscape configuration and patch size. Per-pixel assessment of these thresholds required a layer describing pine forest areas in the landscape. This layer was created by selecting the three pine classes mentioned above, along with Managed Forest, from the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined...
Assessment of Upland Hardwood Forest and Woodland used a measure of the proportion of Oak and Hickory in the forested landscape. This folder contains two data layers: The interpolated Oak Hickory basal area values obtained from USFS (ranging from 0 – 284.777), and a layer describing the proportion of oak hickory created by dividing the Oak Hickory layer by the Interpolated Basal Area of Live Trees data layer (ranging from 0-1). Source data obtained from the USFS live tree species basal area of the contiguous United States (2000 – 2009) data product, which integrates vegetation phenology from MODIS imagery with extensive FIA field plot data of tree species basal area to map species distribution and basal area at...

This cultural resource indicator prioritizes places to create new parks that would fill gaps in equitable access to open space within socially vulnerable communities. It identifies areas where residents currently lack access to parks within a 10-minute walk (accounting for walkable road networks and access barriers like highways and fences), then prioritizes based on park need using demographic and environmental metrics. This indicator originates from the Trust for Public Land’s ParkServe park priority areas.Reason for SelectionProtected natural areas help foster a conservation ethic by providing opportunities for people to connect with nature, and also support ecosystem services like offsetting heat island effects...

This indicator prioritizes areas for new land protection within the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) based on benefits to forest breeding birds that depend on large interior cores of bottomland hardwood habitat (Swainson’s warbler, cerulean warbler, swallow-tailed kite). The model considers core size, the amount of existing protected land within the forest patch, proximity to reforestation priority areas, and risk of conversion to agriculture based on flooding frequency. The highest scores represent drier, unprotected forest patches with cores at least 2,000 ha (~5,000 ac) that are adjacent to priority areas from a complementary reforestation model also developed by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture (LMVJV)....

This indicator measures known and predicted suitable locations of hardbottom habitat and deep-sea corals. It combines multiple datasets from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and The Nature Conservancy.Reason for SelectionHardbottom provides an anchor for important seafloor habitats such as deep-sea corals, plants, and sponges. Many deep-sea corals form tree-like shapes and complex reefs that provide valuable habitat structure. Hardbottom and associated deep-sea coral communities support a wide range of invertebrate and fish species (NOAA 2018).Input Data South Atlantic Blueprint 2021 extent National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) U.S. Northeast/Mid-Atlantic Deep-Sea Coral Habitat...

This mapping project was a collaboration among the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) and staff from the Arkansas Game and Fish and Natural Heritage Commissions. It provides general information on the potential environmental risk to species of concern and sensitive habitats from proposed wind energy projects in Arkansas. According to the Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines, environmental risks include direct impacts e.g., collisions with turbines and associated infrastructure, habitat loss or degradation from turbines and infrastructure, habitat fragmentation, displacement or behavioral changes, and indirect impacts e.g., reduced nesting and breeding densities and the social ramifications of those reductions,...
Title: Providing Coordination and Leadership to the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative F15AC00993. Abstract: The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) and US Fish & Wildlife Service (FWS or Service) entered into this Cooperative Agreement in September 2015, with a start date of January 1, 2016. The agreement was modified twice, to add funds and date extensions to complete activities, and to modify the scope of work to be accomplished under the umbrella of the agreement (Appendix A). Following are some highlights of the activities and scope of work that was included in the Cooperative Agreement: • The Agreement began at a time (2016) when the Gulf Coastal Plains & Ozarks Landscape...

The Streams and Rivers Condition Index is a broad ecological system index that classifies the landscape’s streams and river catchments into condition categories. The classification of the landscape in this manner is used to measure the relative departure of current wildlife habitat conditions from desired conditions as defined by parcel-level wildlife managers and landscape planners. The purpose of the index is to help practitioners determine appropriate next actions in each catchment, especially when used in conjunction with relevant species information. There are four condition categories, or classes, which range from the most ideal habitat conditions to the least ideal habitat conditions.

This indicator is an index of habitat suitability for five forested wetland bird species (Acadian flycatcher, Kentucky warbler, yellow-throated warbler, prothonotary warbler, red-shouldered hawk) within bottomland hardwood forests and riparian areas in the West Gulf Coastal Plain and Ouachitas Bird Conservation Region. It uses metrics like patch size, dispersal distance, distance to water, and more to assess the potential for habitat to support sustainable populations of these birds. This indicator originates from the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture’s forested wetland decision support model for the West Gulf Coastal Plain and Ouachitas region.Reason for SelectionSome factors related to patch size and landscape...

This indicator counts the number of aquatic species within each 12-digit HUC subwatershed in West Virginia that are listed as G1 (globally critically imperiled), G2 (globally imperiled), or threatened/endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. It originates from the Environmental Protection Agency’s EnviroAtlas data.Reason for SelectionThis indicator identifies areas with abundant rare and endemic aquatic species that would benefit from conservation action. It captures patterns of rare and endemic species diversity not well-represented by other freshwater indicators. It complements the other imperiled aquatic species indicator, which uses aquatic Species of Greatest Conservation Need, but does not yet cover...

This indicator is a continuous index of dolphin and whale density based on monthly density predictions for ten species of cetaceans and yearly density predictions for three rarer cetacean species (monthly: North Atlantic right whale, sperm whale, Sei whale, humpback whale, fin whale, bottlenose dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, harbor porpoise, and Atlantic white-sided dolphin; yearly: pilot whale, beaked whale, striped dolphin). It originates from Duke Marine Lab marine mammal models.Reason for SelectionMarine mammals help identify key areas of ocean productivity and overall ocean health, are regularly monitored, and resonate with a variety of audiences. Marine mammals are often used as ocean...

This indicator depicts the capacity of coastal habitats to migrate to adjacent lowlands in order to sustain biodiversity and natural services under increasing inundation from sea-level rise. It is based on the physical and condition characteristics of current tidal complexes, their predicted migration space, and surrounding buffer areas. These characteristics include marsh complex size, shared edge with migration space, sediment balance, water quality, natural landcover, landform diversity, and many others. This indicator originates from The Nature Conservancy’s Resilient Coastal Sites project. Reason for Selection The resilient coastal sites indicator seeks to capture features of salt marshes that are important...
