Prairies were once widespread across North America, but are now one of the most endangered and least protected ecosystems in the world. Agriculture and residential development have reduced once extensive prairies into a patchwork of remnant prairies and “surrogate” grasslands (e.g., hayfields, planted pastures). Grassland ecosystems and many grassland-dependent birds are also particularly vulnerable to rapid shifts in climate and associated changes in drought and extreme weather. The Central Flyway is a vast bird migration route that comprises more than half of the continental U.S., and extends from Central America to Canada, and harbors the greatest diversity of grassland birds in North America. Throughout this...

For 7 species: American woodcock (amwo), Bicknell's thrush (bith), Blackburnian warbler (blbw), Box turtle (teca), Cerulean warbler (cerw), Moose (moose), and Saltmarsh sparrow (sals) we provide five distinct datasets. Species codes (in parenthesis) are used in file names and represented by "[species]" below. 1. A set of conservation cores that represent areas of high local, relative value to the species either in the present, the future, or both: [species]_allcores.shp 2. Conductance among the present condition cores: [species]_conduct.tif 3. Conductance among the future cores: [species]_conduct_futr.tif 4. The landscape capability of the species in 2020 (an input dataset to this analysis): [species]_LC_2020_v5.1.tif...

As the climate continues to change, vulnerable wildlife species will need management strategies to help them adapt to these changes. One specific management strategy is based on the idea that in certain locations, climate conditions will remain suitable for species to continue to inhabit into the future. These locations are known as climate “refugia”. In contrast, other locations may become too hot, dry, or wet for species to continue to inhabit. When wildlife managers are considering protecting land for vulnerable species, it can be helpful for them to understand where these climate refugia are located, so that they can be prioritized for conservation. However, most tools used by resource managers to manage these...

Abstract (from Wiley Online Library): Tidal marsh restoration and creation is growing in popularity due to the many and diverse set of services these important ecosystems provide. However, it is unclear what conditions within constructed settings will lead to the successful establishment of tidal marsh. Here we provide documentation for widespread and rapid development of tidal freshwater wetlands for a major urban estuary as an unintended result of early industrial development. Anthropogenic backwater areas established behind railroad berms, jetties, and dredge spoil islands resulted in the rapid accumulation of clastic material and the subsequent initiation of emergent marshes. In one case, historical aerial photos...
