The main tools for projecting future climate variations are global climate models, also called general circulation models (GCMs). These global models are improving and can be used to assess the effects of different scenarios of greenhouse gas emissions on the broad features of the earth’s climate. However, state-of-the-science GCMs are much too spatially coarse to represent the processes and features of weather and climate in small areas, especially where local effects of mountains have a strong influence.
