This tool was developed to model species potential occurrences for several focal bird species classified as bottomland hardwood, forested riparian, or grassland birds. This tool was developed using existing scripts developed by the USGS GAP Analysis program ( https://gapanalysis.usgs.gov/species/data/ ). These scripts were modified to be able to calculate potential occurrence values for multiple species at once and to accommodate the alteration of the reclass tables to include a more complex habitat preference scoring system than the binary 1/0 values currently provided by the GAP program. The output of the tool consists of potential species occurrence rasters for each species, for each focal hydrologic unit...
The USGS Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center developed a Monarch Relevant Land Cover data set covering the area of Canada. We used the 2010 land cover data set produced by the tri-national North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS) and supported by the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) that depicts year 2010 land cover across North America at 30-meter spatial resolution, and incorporated additional spatially-explicit information to develop this land cover map. Additional sources of information included 2004 railroad data provided by The Atlas of Canada and the CEC, 2017 roads data provided by Statistics Canada, 2017 protected areas data provided by the CEC, and 2016 Canada provincial/territory...
To help determine whether Hg had a causal effect on corticosterone, we investigated the impact of experimental Hg intake on the corticosterone stress response in captive juvenile loons. Juveniles were subjected to three different feeding regimes: 0, 0.4 and 1.2 µg Hg (as MeHgCL)/g wet weight (ww) fish. We then measured baseline and 30 min post-solitary confinement stressor corticosterone concentrations. The data set consists of times of blood draws and dietary Hg levels. Blood samples and data set were provided to the senior author for analysis.

To describe calling activity of Pseudacris crucifer in relation to temperature, precipitation, and wetland water levels, we programmed an acoustic recorder (Wildlife Acoustics) to sample seasonal amphibian calls remotely at study site SC4DAI2 in the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway from 2008 to 2012. We programmed the recorder to sample for five minutes at the top of every hour of every day from late winter/early spring through late summer. We used the Songscape option in Songscope software to generate annual summaries of all of our acoustic samples from SC4DAI2. These summaries included a median dB level for each prescribed frequency within each recording. Pseudacris crucifer, the spring peeper, inhabited SC4DAI2...
These data are associated with an article published in Global Ecology and Conservation (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.gecco.2020.e01173) that describes climate's cascading effects on disease, predation, and hatching sucess in the Yosemite toad (Anaxyrus canorus). The Yosemite toad currently is federally listed as threatened under the U.S. Endanered Species Act based upon reported population declines and vulnerability to climate and other global-change factors. The species occurs only in California’s central Sierra Nevada at medium to sub-alpine elevations. Lands throughout its range largely are protected from development, but climate and other global-change factors potentially can limit populations.

Our model is a full-annual-cycle population model {hostetler2015full} that tracks groups of bat surviving through four seasons: breeding season/summer, fall migration, non-breeding/winter, and spring migration. Our state variables are groups of bats that use a specific maternity colony/breeding site and hibernaculum/non-breeding site. Bats are also accounted for by life stages (juveniles/first-year breeders versus adults) and seasonal habitats (breeding versus non-breeding) during each year, This leads to four states variable (here depicted in vector notation): the population of juveniles during the non-breeding season, the population of adults during the non-breeding season, the population of juveniles during the...
This dataset is a collection of cropped avian images that pair with species identification annotation values.
This R code conducts the main changepoint analyses described in the manuscript titled “Evidence for a growing population of eastern migratory monarch butterflies is currently insufficient”, authored by W. E. Thogmartin, J. A. Szymanski, and E. L. Weiser. The code calculates step and segmented changepoints, checks model assumptions for fitted models, calculates the probability of a >=6.05 ha population given a mean expected population of 3.2 ha, calculates the number of additional years required to provide for a statistically significant trend in the event that the current data are not significant, and calculates the probability of continued increase.
The sampling locations provided here were selected as a two-stage Generalized Random Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) sample (Stevens & Olsen 2004). The first stage of the GRTS draw used a master sample developed by the North American Bat Monitoring Program (Loeb et al. 2015) from a 10 x 10 km grid placed over the conterminous U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Each 10 x 10 km grid cell (hereafter, master cell) was assigned a GRTS rank by NABat. The rank represents the priority order in which master cells should ideally be sampled. For the second stage of the draw, sampling points within a master cell were selected. Each point was defined as a 30 x 30 m cell of the GIS raster that defined monarch-relevant habitat. Sampling...

We produced this data set as part of a larger, integrated study to assess the statuses of populations of Anaxyrus canorus and the causes of observed effects on fitness at field sites, primarily in Yosemite National Park near Tioga Pass, from 1996 to 2001. To assess and document the depths to the tops of individual A. canorus and Pseudacris regilla egg masses and to the sediments, we measured water depths at masses of both species. We used a meter stick to measure the depth (nearest mm) where female A. canorus deposited individual egg masses, and the distance from the water’s surface to the tops of those masses, at several breeding sites across 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. We did the same for egg masses of P. regilla...

The comma-delimited fields in this dataset provide values for the remotely sensed variables analyzed for landscape blocks described in the paper, "Multi-year data from satellite- and ground-based sensors show details and scale matter in assessing climate’s effects on wetland surface water, amphibians, and landscape conditions," by Sadinski et al. (submitted). The field labeled “BlockSite” links the records in this file with a set of boundaries in a shapefile called “Study_Block_Boundaries.shp” The records represent weekly measurements of normalized difference vegetation index (BlockNDVI) values and total evapotranspiration (BlockETmm), as well as the annual snow-off date (BlockDOYsnowfree) for the study blocks from...
This code supports the manuscript Kenow KP, Houdek SC, Fara LJ, Erickson RA, Gray BR, Harrison TJ, Monson BA, Henderson CL. In Press. Patterns of mercury and selenium exposure in Minnesota common loons. Environ Toxicol Chem XXXX:XX-XX; DOI: 10.1002/etc.4331. Specifically, we used this code to examine Loon blood Hg concentrations were related with predictions of Hg concentrations in standardized 12-cm whole organism yellow perch (Perca flavescens), based on fish Hg records from lakes throughout Minnesota, using the U.S. Geological Survey National Descriptive Model for Mercury in Fish.
Breeding common loons for the movement and foraging pattern study were obtained from lakes in central and northern Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Both adults of a territorial pair were fitted with archival geolocator tags (Model LAT 2500; 34.6 x 8.3 mm, 4.4 g; Lotek Wireless Inc.). A combination of adhesive and plastic cable ties were used to affix the geolocator tag to a modified lock-on aluminum leg band. Tags were programmed to collect daily location estimates for up to two years, tag temperature (0.02o C accuracy, ≤ 0.05o C resolution) at 30-min intervals, and pressure data (±1% accuracy, 0.05% resolution) at 20-sec intervals during daylight hours to document foraging patterns...
