The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy, conducted a study on the magnetic record contained in subsurface basalts within coreholes at the Idaho National Laboratory. Standard 1 inch paleomagnetism core samples were collected from 11 coreholes. The samples were characterized for polarity and average paleomagnetic inclinations over the entire length of the drill core. However, paleomagnetic declination data were not obtained due to the original azimuth of the drill cores not being preserved during drilling. The samples were extracted from individual lava flows based on identification of flow tops and bottoms in the drill core. These samples were then transported to the USGS Paleomagnetic...

During 2017 and 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Idaho National Laboratory Project Office, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), drilled and constructed borehole USGS 145 (USGS site 433358113042701) for hydrogeologic data collection and stratigraphic framework analyses. The well is located along the western boundary of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) just south of highway 20. USGS 145 was continuously cored from approximately 3 to 1,368 feet below land surface (BLS), and had water level of 704.73 ft BLS directly after drilling. Core was recovered over a two-year period, this includes cored depths from 3 to 678 ft between May 30, 2017,and November 13, 2017, and from 678 to 1,368 ft between...

In 2019 and 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for Naval Reactors Laboratory Field Office or Naval Reactors Facility (NRF), drilled and constructed borehole USGS 152 (433906112553401) for seismic and stratigraphic framework analyses at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) near the NRF, located in southeastern Idaho. Borehole USGS 152 was continuously cored from approximately 19 to 1,259 ft below land surface (BLS) and rotary drilled from approximately 1,259 to 1,630 ft BLS. Core drilling was discontinued after 1,259 ft BLS and changed over to straight rotary drilling due to funding constraints and deadlines. Core logs are displayed for three borings (USGS...
In 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), drilled and constructed borehole USGS 144 (433021112552501) for stratigraphic framework analyses and water quality monitoring at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL), located in southeastern Idaho. Borehole USGS 144 was continuously cored from approximately 4 to 639 ft below land surface (BLS). The final construction depth, after reaming out cored section of the well, is 620 ft BLS. The USGS INL Project Office drilling team performed the core drilling operations and well construction between August 22, 2016, to December 7, 2016. The USGS collected geophysical data, daily drilling notes, and prepared detailed core...

In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for Naval Reactors Laboratory Field Office or Naval Reactors Facility (NRF), drilled and constructed borehole USGS 151 (433846112540701) for stratigraphic framework analyses at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) near the NRF, located in southeastern Idaho. Borehole USGS 151 was continuously cored from approximately 48 to 1,070 feet below land surface (BLS) and rotary drilled from approximately 1,070 to 1,720 feet BLS. Core drilling was discontinued after 1,070 feet BLS and changed over to straight rotary drilling due to funding constraints and deadlines. The USGS collected select geophysical data, daily drilling...
A collection of analysis-ready datasets for the U.S. Geological Survey - Idaho National Laboratory (USGS-INL) groundwater and surface-water monitoring networks, administered by the USGS-INL Project Office in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy. The data collected from wells and surface-water stations at the Idaho National Laboratory and surrounding areas have been used to describe the effects of waste disposal on water contained in the eastern Snake River Plain aquifer, located in the southeastern part of Idaho, and the availability of water for long-term consumptive and industrial use. The datasets include long-term monitoring records dating back to measurements from 1922. Geospatial data describing...

In 2021 and 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed well SEP 16 (431900112593601) approximately 6 miles south-southeast of Big Southern Butte in Butte County, Idaho. The purpose of the well installation was to collect geologic, geophysical, and hydrologic data. On July 13, 2022, the USGS Idaho National Laboratory Project Office (INLPO) collected select geophysical logs within the cased well including natural gamma, neutron, neutron porosity, and gamma-gamma dual density logs. Gyroscopic deviation data were also collected during geophysical surveying to account for the horizontal and vertical displacement of the well. On...

In 2022, Cold Steel Mechanical, contracted by the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR), drilled and constructed twelve wells in Raft River Valley, Idaho. The wells were drilled using compressed air, dual rotary methods and were fully cased to completed depths. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected groundwater level and select geophysical data at each well between November 15th and 18th, 2022. Geophysical data were collected using Century™ multi-parameter logging probes and select logs are displayed in well log figures. Select geophysical logs include natural gamma, neutron, gamma-gamma density, specific conductance, and temperature. Geophysical data shown in well log figures were collected using the...
