The document reviews the theory of distance sampling, important assumptions, and case studies where distance sampling has been used. Reported in this document are results from some power analysis to guide design of a pilot study. This report became part of a Master’s thesis project and was used for development of a field protocol.

The Spectacled Recovery Plan identified annual nesting surveys as the primary method to assess recovery status for Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) subpopulation. In addition to documenting population status for spectacled eiders, the survey provides annual information on egg production, nesting effort, phenology, and habitat use for three other focal species including cackling geese, emperor geese, and greater white-fronted geese. Numbers of nests of the four species are stable or increasing in the short-term (2007-2016) and long-term (1985-2016). In 2016, the estimated number of spectacled eider nests (9,464) was the second highest in the history of the survey, but nest success was poor and clutch size very...

The Pacific Flyway Winter Brant Survey (WBS) has been conducted annually since 1981 as part of a cooperative effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Canadian Wildlife Service, Mexico, and the Pacific U.S. states, to estimate the abundance of the Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) in their principal wintering areas along the Pacific Coast (in Baja, Mexico, California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska). The survey is conducted each winter in January-February by a composite of ground and aerial crews, with the Alaska portion being conducted by the Alaska Region of USFWS Migratory Bird Management. The primary objective of the Alaska survey component is to provide an annual index of...

This R code uses the nest card data (“Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”), cumulative observer experience data (“cumnest.csv”), and the output from the detection model to produce nest population estimates for focal species or species groups. Model results used are the the maximum likelihood estimates and covariance matrix from Program Mark for “model 7” or from a Bayesian posterior distribution based on a generalized linear mixed model for detection with random effects for plot, year, and crew. Results from “model 7” are produced only to provide population estimates based on legacy methods as reported in past reports. For final estimates, results from the Bayesian posterior should be used. Result from either model cannot...

Dusky Canada geese (Branta canadensis occidentalis) comprise one of the smallest populations of geese in North America and their breeding range is limited to Prince William Sound, primarily the Copper River Delta, and Middleton Island, Alaska. The Alaska Region of Migratory Bird Management initiated an aerial breeding pair survey on the Copper River Delta in 1986 after reported declines in the abundance of dusky Canada geese on their nesting and wintering grounds. Since 2008, the Pacific Flyway Council uses results of the aerial breeding pair survey, together with Middleton Island ground counts conducted by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, as a management index to determine optimal hunting regulations. Survey...

This data set record the actual length of searched transect within the study area. By design transects extended outside the study area in some case or logistical or mechanical issue prevented all transects from being searched. This record of search effort was re-contrasted from observer track files, field notes, and examination of other data. See the file wrangle_2022.R and comments within for details on reconstructing effort.

This zip folder contain a set of text files of GPS way point data used to determine nest location, and thus, distance from the transect. These files are used as raw input during the quality control process. See the file wrangle_2022.R for details.

Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta,
This is R code used to clean, quality controll and format the distance sampling data used for analysis. Main issues are detailed in comment within the code. Raw data is read in, clean, and formatted for analysis. Major outputs are, Effort_2022.csv, Nest_Distance_QC_2022.csv, Dead_Distance_QC_2022.csv. Input are raw transcribed data from nest cards (NestCards_20221116.csv), waypoint data from three different devices.

This report provides information for the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Migratory Bird Management (USFWS DMBM), Alaska Migratory Bird Co-management Council (AMBCC; comprised of the USFWS, Alaska Department of Fish and Game [ADFG], and Alaska Native representatives), Pacific Flyway Council (PFC), and other entities interested in the management, monitoring, and biology of emperor geese. Sport and subsistence hunting of emperor geese was closed in 1986 and 1987, respectively, due to a population decline and conservation concerns. Since the mid-1980s, abundance has increased. During 2012–2015, proposals requesting a legalized harvest have been submitted by Alaska subsistence users through the AMBCC. Past...

Data,
There are four kinds of observers that will be examining photos for birds, and four separate datasheets will contain results from these observers for each survey. The first observer, ‘PRI’ = the primary observer, looks at all photos taken and records bird presence/absence. The ‘SEC’ = the secondary observer, speciates the birds found by the primary observer, and counts the Steller’s eiders. The ‘TER’ = the tertiary observer, reviews the speciation and/or counts of the secondary observer as a check. The ‘ERR’ = the error rate observer, independently records bird presence/absence in a subset (10%) of the photos that the primary observer viewed as a check on the PRI accuracy. When all are complete, they are combined...

This is a collection of datasets that are comprised final MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial survey data. Using R code produced by Brad Shults (files ending in .Rmd found in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’), these data were produced from the raw survey data (‘raw_data’); some quality control was completed using this GitHub R code, though some columns of these datasets still contain errors and these data are not tidy. However, these data are used to produce figures and tables in annual reports so no further tidying or quality control was conducted for these data. Additional details can be found in entity and domain data dictionary definitions.

This dataset was created by Heather Wilson and sent to Julian Fischer on 6/29/21 and forwarded by him to Maggie Harings on 7/1/21. Heather created this document in order to track general survey details including pilot names, observer names, aircraft types used during each survey, and survey notes for the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose surveys. This document has not been tidied and it is unclear whether is has been put through a quality control process. In addition, Heather made several attempts to track down missing information in this document for survey years 1982-1999 but was unsuccessful. Therefore, this document is incomplete and should be treated as such. For additional information regarding this document, please...

This is a geojson file that define the spatial polygon of the YKD nest plot study area. From 1998 to current, nest plot centroids are randomly selected from this area with the constraint that plots cannot overlap plots from the previous 5 years. This area also define the area of inference for design-based calculations of nest population estimates. Before 1998, larger areas were sampled, so this file does not apply to those years.
