There are four kinds of observers that will be examining photos for birds, and four separate datasheets will contain results from these observers for each survey. The first observer, ‘PRI’ = the primary observer, looks at all photos taken and records bird presence/absence. The ‘SEC’ = the secondary observer, speciates the birds found by the primary observer, and counts the Steller’s eiders. The ‘TER’ = the tertiary observer, reviews the speciation and/or counts of the secondary observer as a check. The ‘ERR’ = the error rate observer, independently records bird presence/absence in a subset (10%) of the photos that the primary observer viewed as a check on the PRI accuracy. When all are complete, they are combined...

This is a collection of datasets that are comprised final MBM-AK TLSA molting goose aerial survey data. Using R code produced by Brad Shults (files ending in .Rmd found in ‘GitHub_Annual_Report_Code’), these data were produced from the raw survey data (‘raw_data’); some quality control was completed using this GitHub R code, though some columns of these datasets still contain errors and these data are not tidy. However, these data are used to produce figures and tables in annual reports so no further tidying or quality control was conducted for these data. Additional details can be found in entity and domain data dictionary definitions.

This dataset was created by Heather Wilson and sent to Julian Fischer on 6/29/21 and forwarded by him to Maggie Harings on 7/1/21. Heather created this document in order to track general survey details including pilot names, observer names, aircraft types used during each survey, and survey notes for the MBM-AK TLSA molting goose surveys. This document has not been tidied and it is unclear whether is has been put through a quality control process. In addition, Heather made several attempts to track down missing information in this document for survey years 1982-1999 but was unsuccessful. Therefore, this document is incomplete and should be treated as such. For additional information regarding this document, please...

This is an SQLite GeoPackage simple feature multipolygon vector database of the Arctic Coastal Plain survey area transect density strata. There is only one layer that gives the strata boundaries in EPSG:4326. The field “Statra” gives the strata name and the “geom” field gives the simple feature Well Known Text geometry data. See the GitHub site for more information. This product was produced from the file ACPmapping.R and is simplified from the original strata files distributed at https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/65419a58d34ee4b6e05bd001.

This file contains information on Dunlin resightings and recaptures along the East Asian-Australasian flyway, and elsewhere, including date and time, location, and band combination of resighting or recapture, as well as tagging information. A portion of these data (as indicated by field ‘Lagasse.2020’) were used to determine migration along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF). General methods are available in Lagassé et al. 2020. Dunlin subspecies exhibit regional segregation and high site fidelity along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The Condor: Ornithological Applications 122. https://doi.org/10.1093/condor/duaa054. For this analysis data were restricted to resightings within the EAAF that occurred...

This dataset includes a polygon vector shapefile that provides information pertaining to the sampling universe (i.e., the potential sampling units within the study area) from which nest sampling areas were selected. To delineate sampling units (i.e., survey areas), we overlaid the northwest portion (i.e., northwest of the Marsh Creek Anticline) of the 1002 Area of the Arctic NWR with a grid of 16 ha plots (400 × 400 m each) in ArcGIS 10 (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Redlands, CA, USA; Alaska Albers Equal Area Conic NAD83). Given the logistical constraints for obtaining permission to access private lands within the Arctic NWR, we limited our spatial sampling to public lands administered by the U.S. Fish...

This file provides data collected during rapid surveys, with each record pertaining to a unique sighting of a given shorebird or waterfowl species within a survey plot including information on species, number of individuals, and breeding status. Therefore, each survey plot may have multiple records when more than one sighting occurred. Each record also contains information pertaining to the survey plot including date and time of survey, survey conditions, survey location, and ecological and biological conditions of the survey plot. These data do not represent all locations within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge where specific avian species may be present, as surveys only occurred in discrete survey plots. Additionally,...

This file contains information on incidental observations of lemmings and potential shorebird predators from 2011-2014 and 2016-2017 by year including date and time, location, and predator or lemming observations. Data from 2011-2014 were collected as part of the Arctic Shorebird Demographics Network while data from 2016-2017 were collected as part of the Joint Circumpolar Project on Indirect Trophic Interactions. As both studies used the same methodology, the data have been combined here. The data providers have invested considerable effort in QA/QC, but it is possible that undetected errors remain. It is strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the contents of the metadata file associated with these...

This file contains information on artificial nests by year including date and time of deployment, location, status, and nest fate. The data providers have invested considerable effort in QA/QC, but it is possible that undetected errors remain. It is strongly recommended that careful attention be paid to the contents of the metadata file associated with these data to evaluate data set limitations, restrictions, or intended use. The originators of this dataset shall not be held liable for improper or incorrect use of the data described and/or contained herein.Potential users of these data should first contact the data authors listed below, as potential biases may occur within the data depending on the intended use....

This file contains information on shorebird nests found during this study including date and time found, location, status, association with banded adults, estimated incubation dates, monitoring information, nest fate, manipulations, and habitat associations. In this file, incubation periods for each species were estimated based on data from 1) known-age nests (i.e., found during lay and which hatched) from Utiqiavik, 2) Weiser et al. 2018. Life-history tradeoffs revealed by seasonal declines in reproductive traits of Arctic-breeding shorebirds. Journal of Avian Biology. DOI: 10.111/jav.01531, and 3) the Birds of the World (Rodewald and Schulenberg, eds. 20200. Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Ithaca, NY). All float...

The Arctic_shorebird_age_tool.xls was developed by Brooke Hill (updated in 2021 by Sarah Saalfeld) to estimate hatch dates, nest initiation dates, and nest incubation dates for nests with known hatch dates or initiation dates (i.e., date first egg is laid). This tool can be found in the protocol folder. This tool provides species-specific estimates for 10 species: American Golden-Plover (AMGP), Dunlin (DUNL), Pectoral Sandpiper (PESA), Red-necked Phalarope (RNPH), Red Phalarope (REPH), Ruddy Turnstone (RUTU), Semipalmated Sandpipe (SESA), Long-billed Dowitcher (LBDO), Buff-breasted Sandpiper (BBSA), and Western Sandpiper (WESA).To use the tool, enter correct information for maximum number of eggs and either the hatch...

This file provides occurrence (i.e., presence) data for all birds encountered during Spoon-billed Sandpiper surveys (both during and after point counts, excluding shorebirds observed during point counts) including information on date, location, and species observed. These data do not represent all locations where specific avian species may be present, as surveys only occurred in discrete survey plots. Additionally, individual birds may have went undetected within survey plots, as detectability was likely less than 100%, and is a function of many variables, including differences in species, habitat, time-of-year, weather conditions, survey effort, and individual surveyor. The data providers have invested considerable...

This file provides data collected when a chick was captured or recaptured including species, date and time, location, manipulation, and measurements.Information for the Utqiagvik chick monitoring study were obtained concurrently with information obtained for the Utqiagvik shorebird project and information on chicks and nests included in these files is also contained within the Utqiagvik shorebird project archive (file://ifw7ro-file.fws.doi.net/datamgt/mbm/mbmsh_009_Utqiagvik_shorebird_project). If there are discrepancies between the files please use the information contained within the Utqiagvik shorebird project files. Additional information on chick growth was also obtained in 2013 by Kirsten Grond and is included...
