The daily boat tracks of the 2000-2002 winter skiff-based double-sampling surveys were recorded to an onboard computer using the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired). The tracks were recorded by capturing the skiff’s location from a GPS every five seconds as long as the software was running. The software was started at some time between the boat’s engine start and the start of the survey, and was shut down at some time between the end of the survey and engine shut-down. The tracks may thus include the boat’s travel to and from the home base. Note that the 2001 boat tracks are missing.

This dataset, BoatSum.csv, contains the bird and marine mammal data that was collected during boat-based surveys in the summers of 1997-2001 to double-sample portions of the aerial summer Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey.

This dataset, AirSum.csv, contains the raw transcribed bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial summer Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey. Note that this dataset contains records of species that were omitted in the final, quality-controlled data (SummerSimplified.csv), due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design for those species.

The daily flight tracks of the 1997-2002 aerial summer Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey were recorded to an onboard computer using the custom survey software RECORD (John I. Hodges, FWS-MBM-Alaska, retired). The tracks were recorded by capturing the plane’s location from a GPS every five seconds as long as the software was running. The software was started at some time between the aircraft’s engine start and the start of the survey, and was shut down at some time between the end of the survey and engine shut-down. The tracks thus include the aircraft’s flight to and from the airport base. The 29 track files are named TRMMDDYY_AIR.csv, where MM = month, DD = day, and YY = year.

This dataset, BoatWin.csv, contains the bird and marine mammal data that was collected during boat-based surveys in the winters of 2000-2002 to double-sample portions of the aerial winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey.

The 25,000 km of shoreline in southeast Alaska was surveyed for waterbirds by fixed-wing aircraft in summer and winter during the period 1997 to 2002. A ground/boat survey double sampled 20% of the summer habitat and 5% of the winter habitat to adjust and enhance the air survey. The most abundant species during the summer surveys, with visibility correction factors applied, were gulls (Larus spp.; 306,200, CV = 0.004), scoters (Melanitta spp.; 185,700, CV = 0.004), and Harlequin Duck (Histrionicus histrionicus; 34,640, CV = 0.03). The most abundant species observed during the winter surveys were goldeneyes (Bucephala islandica and B. clangula; 121,920, CV = 0.01), gulls (105,000, CV = 0.01), Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos;...

This dataset, WinterSimplified.csv, contains the bird and marine mammal data collected during the 1997-2002 aerial winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Survey, edited for quality-control (QC) purposes. During the QC process, observations of the same species that were less than 0.3 nautical miles apart were merged. Species codes of certain species were changed to a group code, e.g., scoter-specific species (BLSC, SUSC, WWSC) to SCOT. Species that were considered inadequately surveyed due to detection issues or inappropriateness of the survey design were removed.

SEAK_Nearshore_Survey_Area.gpkg is a geopackage that contains a polygon layer of the survey area for the summer and winter Southeast Alaska Nearshore Waterbird Surveys. All of the shoreline in the layer was surveyed, including rocks and small islets.
