The North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) is a multi-national, multi-agency coordinated bat monitoring program across North America. The overall NABat effort provides the biological, administrative, and statistical architecture for coordinated bat population monitoring to support regional and range-wide inferences about changes in the distributions and abundances of bat populations facing current and emerging threats. Data management and centralized data storage capabilities are integral to the success of the NABat Program. As such, the NABat Coordinating Office has developed a web-based application that provides IT infrastructure for the international monitoring program, including cloud-hosted data management...

The North American Bat Monitoring Program (NABat) community in ScienceBase is an application developed to support a multi-national, multi-agency coordinated bat monitoring program across North America. The overall NABat effort provides the biological, administrative, and statistical architecture for coordinated bat population monitoring to support regional and range-wide inferences about changes in the distributions and abundances of bat populations facing current and emerging threats. The attached documents were designed to assist NABat partners and users with navigating the NABat database and user interface. Subject matter ranges from creating NABat user accounts and new projects to the specifics of data processing...

The NABat program uses a “Master Sample” approach with a grid-based frame. This approach assigns a spatially balanced and randomized ordering of all 10X10 km grids from a finite grid-based sampling frame using a Generalized Random-Tessellation Stratified (GRTS) survey design. The data contained in this space contain provisional NABat “Master Sample” grid packages. There are two primary “Master Sample” grid packages available: Continental United States (CONUS) and Alaska/Canada. Each “Master Sample” grid package include shape files of the entire geographic extent of the finite grid-based sampling frame as well as the spatially balanced and randomized ordered list of the 10x10km grid cells. Subsamples (e.g.,...
We analyzed detection/non-detection data from acoustic surveys of bat species in Colorado during the summers of 2016 and 2017. The goal of this analysis is to create species distribution maps estimating the probability of occupancy across the state for each species. We fit a community occupancy model using both years of data from all the available species. Spatially explicit covariates were included to explain heterogeneity in the probabilities of occupancy and nightly covariates were used to model detection. We also allowed for spatial patterns in the probability of occupancy for each species in order to account for the ranges of many species including only a portion of Colorado. This is also useful for explaining...

The success of the program relies on data providers recording and uploading survey metadata in a standardized format. NABat metadata forms, upload templates, and field datasheets were created to help users ensure the appropriate...
