The Louisiana State Legislature created the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. Mitochondrial DNA markers have elucidated patterns of connectivity between green turtle nesting populations (rookeries) and juveniles foraging in neritic nursery habitats. However, missing rookery baseline data and haplotype sharing among populations have often impeded inferences, including ascertaining origins of Gulf of Mexico juveniles. Risk assessments describe the risk of a species’ invasion in a location, and many risk assessments have been produced by different institutions for various reasons. However, information is sporadically located online, increasing the difficulty of developing comprehensive lists of species with risk assessments or comparing assessment results across species in locations of interest. Conservation of imperiled species is frequently challenged by insufficient knowledge of life history and the environmental factors that affect various life stages. The larvae (glochidia) of most freshwater mussels in the family Unionidae are obligate ectoparasites of fishes. We describe the early life history of the federally endangered Southern Kidneyshell, Ptychobranchus jonesi, and compare methods for estimating fecundity and conducting host trials on conglutinate-producing mussel species. Both the glochidial inoculation baths and direct feeding of conglutinates to Percina nigrofasciata, Etheostoma edwini, and Etheostoma fusiforme resulted in successful metamorphosis to the juvenile life stage. Mid-sized mammals (i.e., mesomammals) fulfill important ecological roles, serving as essential scavengers, predators, pollinators, and seed dispersers in the ecosystems they inhabit. Consequently, declines in mesomammal populations have the potential to disrupt ecological processes and degrade ecosystems. However, ecosystems characterized by high functional redundancy, where multiple species can fulfill similar ecological roles, may be less impacted by the loss of mesomammals and other vertebrates. However, the provision of useful and accessible models is a challenge because there is often a disconnect between model output and its use by decision makers. Inaccurate systematics confound our ability to determine evolutionary processes that have led to the diversification of many taxa. The North American freshwater mussel tribe Lampsilini, Ihering, 1901, is one of the more well-studied groups in Unionidae; however, many supraspecific relationships between lampsiline genera remain unresolved. Two genera that have been largely overlooked are Leptodea and Potamilus, which have both been hypothesized to be non-monophyletic. We set out to resolve supraspecific relationships in Lampsilini and test the monophyly of Leptodea and Potamilus using an integrative approach. This study evaluated surface elevation change and vertical accretion of sediments in hollows and on top of hummocks associated with the base of tree stems in tidal freshwater forested wetlands. Sites were along a gradient of habitat change from freshwater forest to marsh and tracked hollow subsidence and in-filling with transgression over 6 (Virginia) to 12 (South Carolina/Georgia) years. Both deep and shallow Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) were used and compared with accretion of surficial sediments during overlapping assessment periods.

Coastal Louisiana wetlands are one of the most critically threatened environments in the United States. These wetlands are in peril because Louisiana currently experiences greater coastal wetland loss than all other States in the contiguous United States combined. The datasets presented here were utilized in a larger effort to quantify landscape changes from 1932 to 2016. Analyses show that coastal Louisiana has experienced a net change in land area of approximately -4,833 square kilometers (modeled estimate: -5,197 +/- 443 square kilometers) from 1932 to 2016. Short-term carbon accumulation rates were examined by collecting 10-cm deep soil cores at 24 sites located in marshes spanning the salinity gradient in coastal Louisiana. Percent moisture, bulk density, total carbon content, and the short-term accretion rates obtained with feldspar horizon markers were measured to determine total carbon accumulation and storage rates.

Sand beaches are dynamic, making it difficult to accurately predict habitat loss from sea level rise (SLR). We mapped sand beach habitat based on two datasets - a remotely sensed land cover and hand-digitized aerial imagery collected concurrently with digital elevation data. Data include the predicted area of beach habitat still above water (units = number of pixels) from SLR per decade, for 3 SLR scenarios, based on two mapping methods, for 12 barrier island beaches and 4 control islands off Florida's Gulf Coast.
