Well and aquifer data were collected from field measurements and drillers’ logs. Multiple slug tests were completed at each well with a transducer to record the change in water level and a U.S. Geological Survey standard mechanical slug to displace the well’s water column. A Solinst Levelogger LT F30/M10 electronic transducer (unvented) was used to record water-level changes during each slug test. Water-level changes for each trial were analyzed in AQTESOLV Pro version 4.50.002 using the Springer and Gelhar method of curve fitting.

The Red River of the North (Red River) transports phosphorus from North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota, to Manitoba, Canada, and eventually into Lake Winnipeg. Phosphorus load (or flux) is the amount of total phosphorus (TP) transported by the Red River. The effect of TP load on water quality is a concern, especially with respect to downstream eutrophication issues in Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. There is interest at the State and International level to reduce TP flux – an expensive proposition, depending on the method (controlling sources, settling ponds, buffer strips, changes in land use) that is not always effective during spring runoff. The purpose of the study for which these data were developed...

This data release provides ancillary data that describe potential nutrient sources and processes for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) annual loads for 84 water-quality sites within the Chesapeake Bay. The purpose of the study for which these data were developed is to test causal hypotheses, using structural equation models, related to the drivers of TN and TP load in the Chesapeake Bay over the period 1985-2012. The metadata document the sources of the original data and how the estimates were derived, including estimation of missing values.
The North Dakota State Water Commission and International Joint Commission partnered with USGS to characterize the climate and streamflow in the Souris River Basin and develop a set of daily streamflow traces from 10-day stochastic streamflow traces discussed in Kolars and others (2016).The Kolars and others (2016) dataset is provided and was used to determine the statistical characteristics of historical and stochastically generated climate variables and streamflow in the Souris River Basin from the headwaters of the Souris River Basin in Saskatchewan through Minot, N. Dak. Stochastic streamflow presented in this dataset can be characterized as either regulated or natural (unregulated) streamflow. The natural streamflow...

A High-Resolution Hydrographic Mapping effort was completed for thirteen 12-digit hydrologic units in the Big Sioux River Basin near Sioux Falls in southeastern South Dakota. A digitial elevation model based on light detection and ranging (lidar) data was prepared from four sources. Known culverts were hydro-enforced into the elevation model, and selective drainage techniques were utilized within geographic information systems software to identify additional locations where bridges or culverts needed to be hydro-enforced. These potential locations were given a preliminary screening using aerial imagery, and likely locations were further screened using high-resolution oblique aerial imagery or with site visits. Locations...

A comprehensive study to evaluate salinity and nutrient conditions in the Heart River Basin, North Dakota was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Grant County Soil Conservation District. In this dataset three zipped folders are provided which contain all files necessary to run trend, load, and geochemical models and produce results published in U.S. Geological Scientific Investigations Report 2022-5013 [Tatge, W.S., Nustad, R.A., and Galloway, J.M., 2022, Evaluation of Salinity and Nutrient Conditions in the Heart River Basin, North Dakota, 1970-2020: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2022-5013]. In addition,...

This data release contains geophysical data from electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and passive seismic surveys within and near Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, collected June 2014–September 2019. The data accompanies a USGS scientific invesgations map from Medler and Anderson (2021; https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20215035) and a USGS scientific investigations report by Bender and others (2021; https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20215060). The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineering Center, investigated the use of surface geophysical methods to delineate the top of the Cretaceous Pierre Shale along survey transects in selected areas within and near Ellsworth Air Force Base,...
