The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) utilizes several sampling gears for fisheries-independent monitoring of finfish and shellfish communities. They include bag seines, trawls, gill nets and oyster dredges. TPWD uses multiple gears in a random sampling protocol, and they identify (to the lowest taxonomic unit possible) and count everything that they collect. This dataset contains bay trawl data collected for the Lower Laguna Madre system in Texas from 1982 to 2008. Collected data also included spatial and temporal information describing the sample location and time, collection gear information, hydrological data (e.g. dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and salinity), weather conditions, species caught,...

The purpose of the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) is to monitor the status and trends of selected reefs in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary(FKNMS). CREMP assessments have been conducted annually at fixed sites since 1996 and data collected provides information on the temporal changes in benthic cover and diversity of stony corals and associated marine flora and fauna. The core field methods continue to be underwater videography and timed coral species inventories. Findings presented in this report include data from 109 stations at 37 sites sampled from 1996 through 2008 in the Florida Keys and 1999 through 2008 in the Dry Tortugas. The report describes the annual differences (between...

The Fish Collection at the National Museum of Natural History is the largest in the world, containing an estimated 4 million specimens in over 540,000 lots. The collections are worldwide in coverage. We have the world's largest holdings of Indo-Pacific marine shore fishes and extensive coverage from freshwaters of both North and South America. The National Collection is the principal repository of type specimens in the United States; the 18,955 lots of types comprise the largest type collection of fishes in the world. Please note that slightly over 50% of our holdings are presently listed in our dataset and we are constantly adding records. Approximately 95% of families with freshwater-dwelling species, but less...

NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research and Technology Program (DSCRTP) is compiling a national database of the locations of deep-sea corals and sponges, beginning in U.S. waters. The DSCRTP will make this information accessible to resource managers, the scientific community, and the public over the World Wide Web. The database fulfills NOAA’s requirements under the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA) to identify and map locations of deep-sea corals and to submit this information for use by regional fishery management councils. At present, there is no comprehensive, national-scale data portal for deep-sea corals and sponges. Given the authorities outlined in MSA, NOAA’s Deep Sea Coral Research...

A research program has been initiated by the Minerals Management Service (Contract No. 1435-01-99-CT-30991) to gain better knowledge of the benthic communities of the deep Gulf of Mexico entitled "The Deepwater Program: Northern Gulf of Mexico Continental Slope Habitat and Benthic Ecology". Increasing exploration and exploitation of fossil hydrocarbon resources in the deep-sea prompted the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior to support an investigation of the structure and function of the assemblages of organisms that live in association with the sea floor in the deep-sea. The program, Deep Gulf of Mexico Benthos or DGoMB, is studying the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) continental slope...

Abundance and biomass of fish species collected during the day from 1983 to 1986 off the coast of the southeastern United States (Cape Fear, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). Kali poles are "off-bottom" longlines, designed to place a large number of baited hooks in close proximity to rugged rocky bottom, while minimizing hangups of the gear in the rocks. The poles are attached to a 91-m (100-yard) treated cotton groundline [6.4 mm (1/4 inch)]. Each pole is 3 m (10 feet) long PVC plastic pipe [25-mm (1-inch diameter), schedule 80] and has 6. Each 91-m (100-yard) polypropylene groundline has 20 poles. For thirty years, the Marine Resources Research Institute (MRRI) at the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR),...

As part of a national and global effort to understand and document patterns of invasion in marine coastal waters, we are collecting invertebrates from embayments across North America. Invertebrate collecting devices called settling plates are deployed at marinas, commercial and military docks in several embayments each year. Settling plates are constructed of both wood and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) so that both wood-boring species and hard surface foulers can be collected.

Abstract Written by OBIS-USA using Excerpts from MRRI and SEAMAP-SA Homepages MRRI staff, funded by the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program - South Atlantic (SEAMAP-SA) of the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) have been conducting a shallow water trawl survey in the coastal zone of the South Atlantic Bight since 1986. SEAMAP-SA Shallow Water Trawl Survey cruises are conducted each year in Spring (mid-April to the end of May), Summer (mid-July to mid-August), and Fall (the first of October to mid-November). The goal of this project is to monitor the status and trends of coastal species in the South Atlantic Bight, including fish, shrimp, crabs, horseshoe crabs, sea turtles, mantis shrimp, and...

Abstract Written by OBIS-USA using Excerpts from CRED Homepage Corals are the defining species in one of the highest diversity marine ecosystems, coral reefs. CRED studies of corals address basic questions concerning the distribution, abundance, and condition of corals and coral reefs throughout selected areas of the tropical and subtropical Pacific under U.S. jurisdiction. The suite of questions addressed by CRED studies includes: (1) What is the diversity and relative abundance of corals? (2) How can the habitats in which corals occur be qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed? (3) What is the spatial distribution of habitats in which corals occur? (4) What is the capacity of corals to replenish populations...

In 1998, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's (FWC) Fisheries Independent Monitoring (FIM) program began a long-term monitoring effort of key reef fish populations in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. This effort was aimed at evaluating the relative abundance, size structure, and habitat utilization of specific reef fish species that are targeted by commercial and recreational fisheries.; Smith, S.G., et al. 2011, Multispecies survey design for assessing reef-fish stocks, spatially explicit management performance, and ecosystem condition. Fisheries Research 109(2011)25-41; Brandt, M.E., et. al. 2009, A Cooperative Multi-agency Reef Fish Monitoring Protocol for the Florida Keys Coral...

The National Coral Reef Monitoring Program (NCRMP)’s biological sampling provides a biennial ecological characterization of general reef condition for reef fishes, corals, and benthic habitat (i.e., fish species composition, density, and size; coral species composition, density, size, condition; and benthic community cover) at a broad spatial scale. In the U.S. Atlantic, NCRMP biological sampling includes coral reef and hardbottom habitats in Florida, Flower Garden Banks, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (USVI). NCRMP Fish surveys are conducted using the Reef Visual Census (RVC) stationary point count method (Brandt et al. 2009). Fish surveys are conducted at all NCRMP biological survey sites and may occur...
