Hi-Desert Water District (HDWD) is constructing a wastewater treatment plant as part of a groundwater replenishment and reuse project (GRRP) in the east hydrogeologic unit (Nishikawa, and others, 2003) of the Warren Valley Basin (7-012) (California Department of Water Resources, 2016) in Yucca Valley, CA. The HDWD plans to use reclaimed wastewater for managed aquifer recharge by spreading treated wastewater into unlined ponds at the GRRP facility. Reclaimed wastewater will percolate through the unsaturated alluvium by gravity drainage through the unsaturated zone to the water table located about 370 feet (ft) below land surface (bls). As part of the cooperative efforts between the HDWD and the USGS, the electrical...

Data on the detection range and efficiency of VR2W-69 kHz acoustic receivers (Innovasea Marine Systems Canada Inc., Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada; https://www.vemco.com/) were collected to guide the development of telemetry studies of the Clear Lake Hitch (Lavinia exilicauda chi), an imperiled fish species endemic to Clear Lake, Lake County, California. The study took place June 21, 2021 through July 01, 2021. Receivers we deployed at distances of 0m, 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m, and 300m from a sentinel test tag. The test tag was deployed for 20 minutes and emitted signals approximately 6-7 times per minute. Data recorded included the total number of signals emitted by the test tag and the number of those signals that...
Groundwater arsenic concentrations in the San Joaquin Valley have varied over the decades from 1980 to 2019. This report was compiled to determine whether arsenic concentrations are increasing or decreasing and the mechanism controlling the trends. The San Joaquin Valley contains 4,979 wells with arsenic analyses and possible co-detections of any of the following constituents: dissolved oxygen, field-measured pH, iron, manganese, sulfate, nitrate, or water level. Water quality data comes from two sources: 3,302 wells from with California State Water Resources Control Board - Division of Drinking Water and 1,448 wells from the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Information System (California State Water Resources...
A Gust erosion chamber was used to apply horizontal shear stress to sediment cores obtained from San Pablo and Grizzly (within Suisun) Bays in California. A pair of sediment cores were collected from the same approximate locations in each bay five times between January 22nd, 2020 and March 11th, 2020 for a total of 10 experiments and 20 sediment core results. Locations were chosen to capture the benthic variability along the estuarine salinity gradient, are established benthic monitoring stations, proximity to historic/restored wetlands, and practicality for field operations. Sampling dates targeted spring and neap tide conditions. An onshore experiment was conducted on each core to apply shear stresses with stepwise...

A random forest regression (RFR) model was developed to predict groundwater fluoride concentrations in four western United Stated principal aquifers —California Coastal basin-fill aquifers, Central Valley aquifer system, Basin and Range basin-fill aquifers, and the Rio Grande aquifer system. The selected basin-fill aquifers are a vital resource for drinking-water supplies. The RFR model was developed with a dataset of over 12,000 wells sampled for fluoride between 2000 and 2018. This data release provides rasters of predicted fluoride concentrations at depth typical of domestic and public supply wells in the selected basin-fill aquifers and includes the final RFR model that documents the prediction modeling process...

A three-dimensional extreme gradient boosting (XGB) machine learning model was developed to predict the distribution of nitrate in groundwater across the conterminous United States (CONUS). Nitrate was predicted at a 1-square-kilometer (km) resolution for two drinking water zones, each of variable depth, one for domestic supply and one for public supply. The model used measured nitrate concentrations from 12,082 wells, and included predictor variables representing well characteristics, hydrologic conditions, soil type, geology, land use, climate, and nitrogen inputs. Predictor variables derived from empirical or numerical process-based models were also included to integrate information on controlling processes and...
