This study evaluated sap flow of neotropical mangrove species subjected to background nutrient loading, and well as fertilization with either nitrogen or phosphorus, at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Data collections were made seasonally to model stand water use by mangrove forests as a metric of ecosystem stress through alteration of water use potential at the stand level. Data on leaf-scale water use efficiency, and data from a partial weather station deployed near study sites, were included for enabling model development and calculation of stand water use.

In 1996, 400 tree-centered plots were established by first randomly choosing x- and y- coordinates from an imaginary grid overlaying the study area. Each random point was also randomly assigned a tree-size category from a pre-determined sampling scheme. The scheme was to include 20 trees from each of 5 size categories. Size/height categories were: less than 0.1m, 0.1-1m, 1-2m, 2-3m, and greater than 3.0m. To avoid excessive aggregation of samples, no more than 5 trees in a size class could be chosen within a 100-meter sub-area of the sampling grid. We examined species boundaries within an imperiled group of freshwater mussels in the genus Cyclonaias (Bivalvia: Unionidae) using morphometrics, molecular phylogenetics, and multispecies coalescent models to help guide pending conservation assessments and legislative decisions. Congruence across all lines of evidence indicated that current taxonomy overestimates diversity in the C. pustulosa species complex, while underestimating diversity in the C. nodulata species complex. This study was initiated to provide baseline data and to determine the utility of stable isotope analysis to evaluate the foraging strategies of an opportunistic reptile predator. Stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were evaluated from multiple tissues from terrapin populations to determine spatial or temporal variations in resource use within mangrove habitats in Southern Florida. Environmental DNA (eDNA) detection of invasive species can be used to delimit occupied ranges and estimate probabilities to inform management decisions. Environmental DNA is shed into the environment through skin cells and bodily fluids and can be detected in water samples collected from lakes, rivers, and swamps. In south Florida, invasive Burmese pythons occupy much of the Greater Everglades in mostly inaccessible habitat and are credited with causing severe declines of native species’ populations. Occasionally weather events are large enough to generate or expand beach overwash areas and may inundate all or part of the islands. Dunes with a high relative topography can often be easily distinguished in high-resolution lidar-based digital elevation models (DEMs). Thus, researchers have begun using relative topography metrics, such as the topographic position index (TPI; Weiss, 2001), to identify ridges and upper slopes for extracting dunes from lidar-based DEMs (Wernette et al., 2016; Halls et al. 2018). This dataset contains tree health information in 2022 for ten trees in Buttonland Swamp, part of the Cache River Watershed in Illinois. The data includes the height of the trees along with their crown ratio. This allows an understanding of the size and canopy health of Buttonland Swamp cypress trees. A Munsell color chart was utilized in determining leaf color. Leaf color tells whether the trees are healthy or if they are experiencing stress such as lack of nutrients, exposure to pesticides, or impoundment.

This dataset provides the data associated with a 2015 project to examine factors affecting the occupancy of Gulf Coast Waterdogs along Bayou Lacombe, Saint Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Data include site locations and distance from headwaters, water data (pH, turbidity, salinity, and depth), and capture data from trap checks. For Necturus beyeri captures, the datatset provides the sex of captures and length and mass measurements. The dataset states whether eggs were visible in females, whether each animal was swabbed for disease and whether tissue was clipped for genetics.

A green-tree reservoir (GTR) is a stand of bottomland hardwoods that is intentionally flooded in the fall and winter to support migrating waterfowl. Bottomland hardwood forest plots, installed 1985-1987 in the GTR on Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge (FNWR), are measured every 5-6 years to monitor tree survival, growth, and mortality. An accompanying datafile contains the names, locations, and elevations of the forest plots. These parameters are defined in the Entity and Attributes section of this metadata file. Black mangrove (Avicennia germinans (L.) L.) has historically occurred along the Louisiana coast in saline wetland habitats, but its distribution has been sparse. Mangroves are tropical to semi-tropical species and their distribution is limited by freezing temperatures. Black mangrove distribution and abundance has increased and decreased in the coastal zone of Louisiana according to freeze frequency and duration and concomitant freeze damage and dieback or lack thereof. In 2009, a fixed wing aircraft was used to conduct an aerial cruise census of the entire coastal area of Louisiana to document and map the total distribution of mangroves in the state.

Understanding the long-term consequences of hurricane effects on wildlife and their habitats is critical to efficiently and effectively protect and restore important coastal wetland and marsh habitat. Hurricane Sandy caused widespread and substantial physical, environmental, ecological damage, likely impacting the food supplies, habitats, and reproductive success of many animal species along the coast. Further, physical alterations to habitats throughout the impacted area significantly increased the region’s vulnerability to future storm events, posing new risks to communities and ecosystems.

West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus) are separated into two allopatric subspecies: the Florida manatee (T. m. latirostris) and the Antillean manatee (T. m. manatus). In the winter of 2020-2021, an adult manatee was sighted off the coast of Cancun, Quintana Roo, Mexico, in areas where Antillean manatees are not typically seen. The individual had distinct watercraft scars on its body, which were matched using photo-identification to a known male Florida manatee (PE424) that had been repeatedly photographed in Florida since 1998. The data presented are the verified photo-documented sightings history of PE424 from Florida and Mexico.

This dataset contains cumulative threat data for several species of male sea turtles tagged with satellite tags between 2009 and 2020. It contains information on species, capture date, days during tracking spent in marine protected areas, shipping lanes, near the coast, near oil rigs, and within known fishing operations. This dataset thus allows estimation of threat levels from these anthropogenic pressures for sea turtles tagged in different study sites in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Since its inception, the Everglades Depth Estimation Network (EDEN) has used the High Accuracy Elevation Dataset (HAED) digital elevation model (DEM) to provide scientists and managers with continuous water depth surfaces, derived from interpolated water stage, on a 400 X 400 meter grid. A new, high resolution LiDAR-based DEM is available through a collaboration between Everglades National Park (ENP) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) 3D Elevation Program (3DEP). This new DEM covers the southern part of the EDEN extent, including a large area of ENP and a portion of southeast Big Cypress National Preserve. This package includes a detailed habitat map, general habitat map, and georeferenced imagery from 2017 for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) Caminada Headland Beach and Dune Restoration Incr2 project area (BA-0143). The project restored 489 acres of beach and dune habitat along more than seven miles of Caminada Headland in Jefferson and Lafourche Parishes through the direct placement of about 5.4 million cubic yards of sandy substrate from Ship Shoal.
