Wetland restoration efforts conducted by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in Louisiana rely on monitoring efforts to determine the efficacy of these efforts. The Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) was developed to assist in a multiple-reference approach that uses aspects of hydrogeomorphic functional assessments and probabilistic sampling for monitoring. The CRMS program includes a suite of approximately 390 sites that encompass the range of hydrological and ecological conditions for each stratum. As part of CRMS, land and water classifications are created from Wetland restoration efforts conducted by the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA)...

All samples were collected within a 9km stretch of the Santa Fe River in northern Florida, USA. In 2019 and 2020 we sampled claw tissue from Macrochelys suwanniensis, Chelydra serpentina, and Trachemys scripta scripta, from three different sampling locations. We collected Vegetation and potential prey tissue samples within close proximity of turtle captures from two of the three capture locations. All tissues were used for stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis.

This dataset contains the results from 80 visual encounter surveys at two wetlands in Palmetto Island State Park, Vermillion Parish, Louisiana from August 2015 to April 2019. These surveys mainly targeted snakes but small turtles and anoles were also opportunistically captured. Captured animals were swabbed to determine the prevalence of Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, the causative agent of Snake Fungal Disease. Physical measurements were taken on all captured individuals. This dataset also includes environmental data such as temperature, water level, and humidity at the study site.

Ecological models facilitate evaluation of alternative approaches to restore the Greater Everglades ecosystem. However, the provision of useful and accessible models is a challenge because there is often a disconnect between model output and its use by decision makers. Joint Ecosystem Modeling (JEM) meets this challenge by providing ecological model output tailored to management decisions. Ecological models (i.e., ecological planning tools) were developed and used by JEM during the Central Everglades Planning Project to evaluate potential effects to natural resources in the impacted areas. There is a desire by the planning agencies and bureaus involved in the Western Everglades Restoration Project (WERP) to use...

Burmese pythons are an invasive species in the Greater Everglades Ecosystem. Burmese pythons captured in the ecosystem are euthanized, and in an effort to learn about this invasive species, all euthanized pythons are necropsied, during which time samples are collected. We analyzed the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen in muscle samples from 423 Burmese pythons euthanized and necropsied between 2003-05-01 and 2012-09-02, and after processing and QA/QC, we were left with isotope ratios for 410 samples, which we reported here. We used these data to estimate the size of the isotopic niche of the Burmese python, commonly measured using standard ellipse areas, or SEAs. To put these SEAs in context, we conducted...

The Louisiana State Legislature created Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed pursuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting coastal wetlands loss. This data set includes mosaicked aerial photographs for the Grand Liard Marsh and Ridge Restoration (BA-68) project for 2016. This data is used as a basemap land-water classification. It also serves as a visual tool for project managers to help them identify any obvious problems or land loss within their...

This release consists of soil surface elevation, also called vertical land motion of the wetland (VLMw), and vertical accretion data collected over time across an environmental gradient at Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge near Naples, Florida, USA. VLMw was measured using rod surface elevation tables, while accretion was measured using feldspar marker horizons (i.e., RSET-MH technique). Stations were located in the following wetland types: brackish marsh, salt marsh, transition marsh, and mangrove forest. Vegetation cover in the vicinity of the RSET-MH stations was described. The study spanned six years, from 2011 to 2017.

To quantify the potential for landward migration at the estuary level, we developed a geospatial dataset for the conterminous United States (CONUS) that identifies the boundaries for estuarine drainage areas. Nine estuarine drainage areas in south Florida were delineated using data developed by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD 2018). For the rest of CONUS, we used information contained within the National Fish Habitat Action Plan (NFHAP) - Coastal Spatial Framework (CSF) (National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science 2021). The original NFHAP-CSF data included 612 drainage areas, which were too many for our purposes. Therefore, we merged smaller drainage areas with larger, adjacent drainage areas...

This is a fifty-four second video which includes short segments compiled from video collected using GoPro cameras mounted on two individual loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) within St. Joseph Bay, Florida as part of a preliminary data release for U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) outreach publications. Approximately 90 minutes of video footage was collected per individual prior to retrieval. This is a continuing effort to document the interactions, movement, and feeding ecology of loggerhead turtles for future scientific publications.
Restoration of the Florida Everglades, a substantial wetland ecosystem within the United States, is one of the largest ongoing restoration projects in the world. Decision-makers and managers within the Everglades ecosystem rely on ecological models forecasting indicator wildlife response to changes in the management of water flows within the system. One such indicator of ecosystem health, the presence of wading bird communities on the landscape, is currently assessed using three species distribution models that assume perfect detection and report output on different scales that are challenging to compare against one another. We sought to use current advancements in species distribution modeling to improve models...

The Mississippi River Deltaic Plain has extensive marsh habitats (fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline) where soil cores were collected to a depth of 100 cm at 24 sites to assess long-term carbon accumulation rates and coast-wide burial rates. Each core was sectioned into 2-cm depth intervals, and select intervals were analyzed for percent moisture, bulk density, total carbon, and radionuclide (137Cs and 210Pb).
This USGS Data Release represents geospatial data sets which were created to produce an Unvegetated to Vegetated Ratio (UVVR) for coastal wetlands of the conterminous United States (2014-2018). The following listed image products were generated 1) Annual spatial datasets (rasters) from 2014 to 2018 each containing 4 bands (Band 1: Unvegetated land fraction; Band 2: Vegetated land fraction; Band 3: Water fraction; Band 4: UVVR clipped into 3 coastal regions (Atlantic (ATL) Gulf of Mexico (GOM) and Pacific (PAC). 2) Calibration/Validation Datasets - datasets which were used in the calibration and validation of the above datasets 3) Mean of masked, multiyear composite - Mean vegetated fraction in coastal wetlands in...

Old World Climbing Fern (Lygodium microphyllum (Cav.) R. Br.) is an invasive plant species threatening South Florida ecosystems. In 1989 L. microphyllum was observed in the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. L. microphyllum has attributes that allow it to thrive in South Florida. It produces a huge number of small spores that are easily suspended by wind and dispersed, have a high germination rate, and gametophytes have a high rate of sporophyte production. Aerial dispersal allows it to spread to suitable germination sites and its ability to self-fertilize at such high rates promotes successful colonization. The intense, abundant spore production also assists in saturating most suitable colonization...

Cichlasoma dimerus was only recently discovered in Florida and little is known of its dispersal abilities and potential impacts. Many factors likely contribute to the variability in establishment and spread of non-native fishes in Florida, including biotic (e.g., predation and competition) and abiotic variables (e.g., cold tolerance, low-oxygen tolerance). Of the abiotic variables, cold tolerance is an important regulator of non-native fish geographic ranges in Florida. Its tolerance to cold temperatures is experimentally evaluated and available information on its biology and ecology was synthesized. In the cold-temperature tolerance experiment, temperature was lowered from 24 C by increments of 1 C per hour, mimicking...
