Recent Warming This is an initiative to document and understand the science of recent climate warming in the region and implications for natural resources management. SW CASC researchers from Colorado State University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at University of California-San Diego, and University of Arizona, and their partners, are identifying the extent to which temperature, wind speed, solar radiation, and humidity affect regional aridification. By improving scientific understanding of the mechanisms of aridification, the team aims to inform water management, irrigated agriculture, and the characterization of drought and wildfire risks. The team is developing papers on (a) scientific investigation...
The SW CASC is hosted by the University of Arizona. Other consortium members include: Colorado State University, Desert Research Institute, Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California at San Diego, University of California-Davis, University of California-Los Angeles, and Utah State University. The consortium of fourteen co-investigators continue to address the science research themes of climate science and forecasting, hydroclimate and water availability, ecological responses and vulnerabilities in order to contribute to create better informational exchange practices. Each CASC is a formal collaboration between the USGS, a regional host university, and a multi-institution partner consortium....
The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center (SW CASC) Natural Resources Workforce Development (NRWD) Fellowship was developed to provide graduate students with opportunities for training and practice in developing use-inspired and actionable science to inform natural resource management decisions. Key aspects of the training include: methods to foster collaborations and the development of science that informs resource management decisions; experience in interacting and collaborating with natural resource management decision-makers; and experience in effective communication of research results to enable use of that research. Each year, the fellowship will have a different science theme. The fellowship is...

The Southwest Climate Adaptation Science Center supports conservation and management of the Southwest’s natural resources and cultural heritage by building partnerships between scientists and decision-makers, fostering development of research products to inform decisions, and assisting American Indian communities in adapting to climate change in the southwestern United States. Our vision it to help to maintain and sustain the Southwest’s unique biodiversity, its ecosystems’ diverse contributions to human welfare, and its diverse cultures, [both indigenous and adventitious,] as the region’s climate undergoes change in the coming years and decades. The SW CASC is hosted by the University of Arizona. Other consortium...

The Southwest Adaptation Forum (SWAF) is the gathering of climate adaptation leaders, researchers, and practitioners across the Southwest U.S., to exchange best practices around efforts that are advancing climate adaptation and resilience in the region. SWAF is a regional forum of the National Adaptation Forum.  In collaboration with partners, the SW CASC has hosted two forums, in-person in 2018 and virtual in 2021, and will be hosting the third forum in Albuquerque, NM, in Fall 2022. Click the links below to learn more about each forum. 2018 SWAF 2021 SWAF 2022 SWAF
