This study is an evaluation of the potential environmentalimpacts of contaminated groundwater from the ASARCO metals refiningfacility adjacent to the Missouri River in Omaha, Nebraska. Surfacewaters, sediments, and sediment pore waters were collected from theBurt-Izard drain, which transects the facility, and from the Missouri Riveradjacent to the facility. Groundwater was also collected from thefacility. Waters and sediments were analyzed for inorganic contaminants,and the toxicity of the waters was evaluated with the Ceriodaphnia dubia7-day test. Razorback suckers (Xyrauchen texanus) and Colorado pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus lucius) are two endangered species of cyprinids located in the San Juan River Basin. Numerous factors may be contributing to the decline of these fish populations including hydraulic alterations (impoundment; altered thermal and hydrological regimes), non-native species interactions and contaminants. Aqueous slurries of a test sediment spiked withdibenz[a,h]anthracene, 2,4,5,2',4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl, p.p'-DDE, orphenanthrene were subjected to decontamination experimentation. The spikedsediments were agitated at elevated temperatures for at least 96 hours inthe presence of either of the two contaminant-absorbing media: clusters ofpolyethylene membrane or lipid-containing semipermeable devices (SPMDs).The effects of treatment temperature and surface area of media on theremoval of contaminants were explored. The assessment of contaminant stressors on biota of the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo resulted from an effort of the Biomonitoring for Environmental Status and Trends (BEST) program, to implement pilot projects to evaluate environmental contaminants and their effects on ecosystems. This study resulted in a database of approximately 2,600 concentration values that were georeferenced for use with Geographic Information Systems such as ArcView.
