Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a measure of ecosystem functioning. It represents the cumulative effect of ecological processes such as soil formation, nutrient cycling, photosynthesis, and population dynamics. Productivity may be related to patterns in species diversity (Currie 1991, Hector et al. 1999). For example, the most common hypothesis is that species diversity is greatest at moderate levels of primary productivity (Loreau et al. 2001). BEACONs compiled point and polygon fire datasets from Canada and Alaska for the NWB LCC planning region. Fire point data details the ignition point of all fires as well as attributes describing fire area, fire cause, and fire year. Fire polygon databases provide mapped fire perimeters. These datasets include all point and polygon fires in the data sources described below. Lake-edge density (LED) is an indicator of hydrologic connectivity and vegetation structure. It quantifies the linear density of terrestrial-aquatic edges and represents the abundance of riparian habitat along large waterbodies (i.e., lakes and wide rivers).
