Gross primary productivity (GPP) is a measure of ecosystem functioning. It represents the cumulative effect of ecological processes such as soil formation, nutrient cycling, photosynthesis, and population dynamics. Productivity may be related to patterns in species diversity (Currie 1991, Hector et al. 1999). For example, the most common hypothesis is that species diversity is greatest at moderate levels of primary productivity (Loreau et al. 2001). GPP quantifies the amount of carbon absorbed by living plants during photosynthesis. GPP units are in kilograms of carbon per square metre per year (kg C/m 2/yr). This dataset uses (1) fundamental drainage areas (FDA, NRCAN 2003) and (2) Hydrologic Units 8-digits (HUC8, USGS 2014). BEACONs compiled point and polygon fire datasets from Canada and Alaska for the NWB LCC planning region. Fire point data details the ignition point of all fires as well as attributes describing fire area, fire cause, and fire year. Fire polygon databases provide mapped fire perimeters. Fire polygons from the "fire history" layer from the BLM Alaska Interagency Coordination Center (www.fire.ak.blm.gov) and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) website at (http://www.ciffc.ca) were merged. In Canada, fire polygons from the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia. Year was truncated to 1965 because it was the earliest coverage for the 4 datasets (Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, and British Columbia). This dataset compiles land ownership and management data from state and federal agencies to create a map showing ownership, management, and conservation status of all land in Alaska. Lake-edge density (LED) is an indicator of hydrologic connectivity and vegetation structure. It quantifies the linear density of terrestrial-aquatic edges and represents the abundance of riparian habitat along large waterbodies (i.e., lakes and wide rivers).
