Bedrock geology strongly influences area soil and water chemistry. Even in glaciated landscapes, studies suggest that soil parent material is commonly of local origin, rarely being ice-transported more that a few miles from its source. Bedrock types also differ in how they weather and in the physical characteristics of the residual soil type. Because of this, local lithology is usually the principle determinant of soil chemistry, texture, and nutrient availability. Data from 391 boreholes (including coreholes) that penetrated buried pre-Cretaceous basement rocks that lie beneath Atlantic Coastal Plain sedimentary deposits in Georgia and South Carolina were compiled from non-proprietary, mostly published sources in order to support subsurface geologic mapping, geologic interpretation of geophysical data (aeromagnetic, gravity, seismic), topical studies as in geochronology, and applications ranging from mineral, energy, and water resources to earthquake hazards in the Charleston seismic zone. The Texas Water Development Board classifies the karstic Edwards and Trinity aquifers as major sources of water in south-central Texas. To effectively manage the water resources in the area, detailed maps and descriptions of the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphic units of the aquifers outcropping in Hays County, Tex. are needed. In 2016 and 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Edwards Aquifer Authority, mapped the geologic framework and hydrostratigraphy of the Edwards and Trinity aquifers within Hays County, Tex. at 1:24,000 scale.
