This dataset consists of point gravity station data for 95 stations in the middle Carson River basin as published on figure 7 in the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2011-5055. The points have values of the complete Bouguer anomaly and observed gravity. In addition, 641 selected gravity stations from the U.S. Geological Survey Data Series 42 titled "Gravity data of Nevada" used in this study are included for reference and users are advised to reference that publication for information on those data. This dataset consists of polyline estimates of the thickness of basin-fill sediments at 200-foot contour intervals for the middle Carson River basin as published on figure 9 in the U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2011-5055. The estimates were made using gravity data collected at 736 stations in the middle Carson River basin reduced to a residual complete Bouguer anomaly. A relation between residual gravity and depth to bedrock was developed from descriptions on drillers logs of 25 wells that encountered bedrock.

This USGS data release consists of polygons representing Gumboot Lake extents from the report Effects of ground-water development on the water regimen of Paradise Valley, Humboldt County, Nevada, 1949-1968 and Hydrologic Reconnaissance of the Tributary Areas (Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Water Resources Bulletin 39). A three-dimensional MODFLOW-NWT groundwater flow model was developed to evaluate the impacts of alternative water management scenarios on the groundwater resources of Eagle, Dayton, and Churchill Valleys, Nevada. In addition, the resulting impact on flows in the Carson River and Lahontan Reservoir are also evaluated. During the economic boom that occurred from 2004-2006 in northwestern Nevada, municipal and housing growth increased stress on the limited water resources of this semi-arid region. In 2008, when the economy slowed, new housing development stopped, and immediate pressure on finite groundwater resources abated. This dataset does not extend to the western side of the study area. This dataset does not extend to the eastern side of the study area. The dataset titled "1:500,000-scale hydrogeologic units and estimates of specific yield, eastern part of middle Carson River basin, Nevada (from U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2011-5055, figure 3)" was used for the easternmost 4–5 miles of the study area.

Over the past 15 years Douglas County, NV has removed production wells in northern Carson Valley from use due to relatively high arsenic concentrations (Carl Ruschmeyer, January 2013, Douglas County Public Works Director, verbal communication). To maintain the supply of water to the public, the town of Minden has been providing water to Douglas County and Carson City. Due to the projected increases in municipal demand, water resource managers are concerned that increasing pumping rates from wells in Minden may change groundwater chemistry and degrade the resource by potentially drawing in arsenic enriched water. The persistence and degree of mercury contamination of the lower Carson River system (LCRS) have led to placement of a portion of the Carson River Basin (including Lahontan Reservoir) on the US. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Priorities List ("Superfund") for research and cleanup. The potential toxicity of mercury concentrations within the LCRS to piscivorous birds (snowy egrets, black-crowned night-herons, and double-crested cormorants) was examined from 1997-2006.
