Several evidential layers calculated from the national-scale gravity anomaly map of Australia (Geophysical Acquisition and Processing Section, 2020) are provided here. This directory includes GeoTIFF grids of Bouguer gravity, the horizontal gradient magnitude of the Bouguer gravity, the Bouguer gravity upward continued 30 km, and the horizontal gradient magnitude of the upward continued gravity, The directory also includes shapefiles of locations that trace the maxima of the horizontal gradient magnitude of the gravity and of the maxima of the horizontal gradient magnitude of the upward continued gravity. Otherwise known as “worms”, the points tracking the maxima mark the edges of shallow density sources (in the...

This dataset includes gravity observations collected on the Coconino Plateau, Arizona, from 2015 to 2019 and reductions that were used to arrive at the gravity residual reported in the associated publication (Wildermuth, XXXX). Relative-gravity surveys were carried out using ZLS Burris relative-gravity meter. Absolute gravity values were taken from the closest NGS stations and relative-gravity differences were combined with nearby absolute gravity values using a least-squared network adjustment, as implemented in the software Gravnet (Hwang, C., Wang, C., Lee, L., 2002. Adjustment of relative gravity measurements using weighted and datum-free constraints. Comput. Geosci. 28, 1005–1015). Additional information about...

National-scale geologic, geophysical, and mineral resource raster and vector data covering the United States, Canada, and Australia are provided in this data release. The data were compiled as part of the tri-national Critical Minerals Mapping Initiative (CMMI). The CMMI, established in 2019, is an international science collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Geoscience Australia (GA), and the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). One aspect of the CMMI is to use national- to global-scale earth science data to map where critical mineral prospectivity may exist using advanced machine learning approaches (Kelley, 2020). The geoscience information presented in this report include the training and evidential...

The National Geologic Map Database (NGMDB) is a Congressionally mandated national archive of geoscience maps, reports, and stratigraphic information. The Geologic Mapping Act of 1992 and its Reauthorizations calls for the U.S. Geological Survey and the Association of American State Geologists (AASG) to cooperatively build this national archive, according to technical and scientific standards whose development is coordinated by the NGMDB. The NGMDB consists of a comprehensive set of publication citations, stratigraphic nomenclature, downloadable content in raster and vector formats, unpublished source information, and guidance on standards development. The NGMDB contains information on more than 110,000 maps and...

We present a numeric grid containing estimates of the thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the western United States. Values for these grids were combined and integrated from previous studies or derived directly from gravity analyses. The grids are provided with 1-km grid-node spacing in WGS84 latitude-longitude coordinates. Detailed information regarding the derivation of these estimates is provided by Shah, A.K, and Boyd, O.S., 2018, Depth to basement and thickness of unconsolidated sediments for the western United States - Initial estimates for layers of the U.S. Geological Survey National Crustal Model: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 2018-1115, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr20181115.

Surface electrical resistivity tomography, magnetic, and gravity surveys were conducted in July 2017 in the greater East River Watershed near Crested Butte Colorado with a focused effort in Redwell Basin as part of a broader study of the role of bedrock groundwater in the hydrogeology of mineralized mountain watersheds. Approximately ten kilometers of total field magnetics data were acquired on July 29, 2017 with a Geometrics G-858 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (tens of meters to kilometers) geologic structure based on variations in the magnetic properties of different formations. This data release includes the raw and processed magnetics data. They are provided as digital data, and data...

Ten gravity stations were acquired with a LaCoste and Romberg G-model relative gravimeter to map density variations. This data release includes principal facts for the gravity stations provided as digital data. Data fields are defined in the data dictionary.
The U.S. Geological Survey Southwest Gravity Program aims to provide high-precision time-lapse gravity (repeat microgravity) data for hydrologic studies in the southwestern US. Recent projects include monitoring recharge underneath ephemeral-stream channels, monitoring aquifer-storage change in unconfined and compressible aquifers, measuring preferential storage change at an artificial-recharge facility, and estimating specific yield through the correlation of gravity and water-level change in wells. Projects range in scale from the site-specific (individual recharge basins) to alluvial basin (e.g., the Tucson and Avra Valley groundwater basins). Southwest Gravity Program Data Releases Fact sheet about hydrologic...

Surface electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), time-domain electromagnetics (TEM), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), magnetics, and gravity data were acquired in 2016, 2017 and 2018 in the greater East River Watershed near Crested Butte Colorado with a focused effort in Redwell Basin. Five ERT profiles were acquired within Redwell Basin and Brush Creek to map geologic structure at depths up to 40 meters, depending on the subsurface resistivity, using the Advanced Geosciences, Inc. SuperSting R8 resistivity meter. Approximately ten kilometers of total field magnetics data were acquired with a Geometrics G-858 cesium vapor magnetometer that detects changes in deep (tens of meters to kilometers) geologic structure...

Satellite gravimetric observations of monthly changes in continental water storage are compared with outputs from five climate models. All models qualitatively reproduce the global pattern of annual storage amplitude, and the seasonal cycle of global average storage is reproduced well, consistent with earlier studies. However, global average agreements mask systematic model biases in low latitudes. Seasonal extrema of low-latitude, hemispheric storage generally occur too early in the models, and model-specific errors in amplitude of the low-latitude annual variations are substantial. These errors are potentially explicable in terms of neglected or suboptimally parameterized water stores in the land models and precipitation...

We present a numeric grid containing estimates of the depth to the pre-Cenozoic basement for the western United States. Regional geophysical maps of the Great Basin, USA were generated from new and existing sources to support ongoing efforts to characterize geothermal resource potential in the western US. These include: (1) a provisional regional gravity grid that was produced from data compiled from multiple sources: data collected by the USGS and Utah Geological Survey under various projects, industry sources, and regional compilations derived from two sources: a Nevada state-wide database (Ponce, 1997), and a public domain dataset (Hildenbrand et al., 2002), (2) a regional magnetic grid derived from the North American magnetic compilation map of Bankey et al. (2002) and, (3) a regional depth-to-basement grid derived from Shaw...

Seismic hazard assessments depend on an accurate prediction of ground motion, which in turn depends on a base knowledge of three-dimensional variations in density, seismic velocity, and attenuation. The datasets here are components of a National Crustal Model that couples geologic characteristics and geophysical parameters using a physical theoretical foundation combined with measured data for calibration. The model is intended to be internally consistent and seamless on a national scale; care is also taken to maximize consistency with existing regional models. An initial version of the model components are defined for the western U.S. on a 1-km grid. While the current focus of this effort is on improving estimates...
