Geospatial datasets were developed to estimate the depth to the top of the Dakota Sandstone in feet below land surface datum within the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation in Colorado. This study was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. One dataset was created for the contours showing the altitude (in feet) of the top of the Dakota Sandstone (shapefile Kd_talt_hand), and a second dataset was created for polygons representing the outcrops of the Dakota Sandstone (shapefile Dakota_outcrop_poly). These two datasets were used in combination with USGS digital elevation models (DEM) to create a dataset for the depth of the top of the Dakota Sandstone below the land surface...

Evaluating Decadal Changes in Groundwater Quality: Groundwater quality data were collected from 5,000 wells between 1988-2001 by the National Water-Quality Assessment Project. Samples are collected in groups of 20-30 wells with similar characteristics called networks. About 1,500 of these wells in 67 networks were sampled about 10 years later between 2002-2012 (second sampling event) to evaluate decadal changes in groundwater quality. Between 2012 and 2016 (third sampling event), a subset of these networks has been sampled again, allowing additional results to be displayed on the web page: Decadal changes in groundwater quality. This is the third iteration of data added to the website, so this data release is referred...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board collected produced water and gas samples in the Midway-Sunset, Poso Creek, and Buena Vista Oil Fields in Kern County in 2020 and 2021. Sampled sites included oil wells; injectate from tanks, pipelines, and injection wells where produced water from many wells, after removal of oil, is stored or transported prior to underground injection; and integrated produced water from many oil wells collected from pipelines before oil removal. This digital dataset contains the site information, analyzing laboratories and methods, and water and gas chemistry and quality-control results for these samples. Chemistry results include...

Groundwater age distribution and susceptibility to natural and anthropogenic contaminants were assessed for selected principal aquifers of the Western United States: the Central Valley aquifer system (CVAL), the Basin and Range basin-fill aquifers (BNRF), the Rio Grande aquifer system (RIOG), the High Plains aquifer (HPAQ), the Columbia Plateau basaltic-rock aquifers (CLPT), and the Colorado Plateaus aquifers (COPL). Groundwater ages were estimated by calibration of environmental tracers (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, chlorofluorocarbons, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14 and radiogenic helium-4) to lumped parameter models (LPMs) for 1,353 samples from 1,182 sample locations. Groundwater samples were collected from...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity, characterizing aquifer systems, and documenting the effects of oil field water injection in the Elk Hills Elk Hills, Buena Vista, and Coles Levee Oil Fields, San Joaquin Valley, California. Data provided in this data release include borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of water samples, hydrologic data, geological formation depths, and information on observed well log resistivity anomalies—interpreted to be from injection for disposal of produced water from oil wells or from natural causes. The data reported here were...

This report provides a full digitization of historic groundwater-quality and depth-to-water data from Mendenhall and others (1916) Water Supply Paper 398, “Ground Water in San Joaquin Valley, California” in a modern format suitable for further analysis of California’s water supply resources. Included are geochemical data for over 400 wells collected by Mendenhall in the fall of 1910, as well as depth-to-water and well construction information from over 4000 wells compiled by his team from over 15 years of well surveys throughout the San Joaquin Valley. Additionally, these data provide geospatial and geochemical data for sampled wells in California's San Joaquin Valley (SJV) in support of the publication: Jeffrey...

This data release contains groundwater-quality data for three parameters of interest (arsenic, manganese, and pH) and well information for sample sites for aquifers in the conterminous U.S. Water-quality data and well information were derived from a dataset compiled from three sources: the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Safe Drinking Water Information System (SDWIS), and numerous agencies and organizations at the state, regional, and local level. The data compilation of the National Water Quality Program’s groundwater assessment team is an internal dataset informally referred to as the National Groundwater Aggregation (NGA)....

Groundwater is a vital resource in the Mississippi embayment physiographic region (Mississippi embayment) of the central United States and can be limited in some areas by high concentrations of trace elements. The concentration of trace elements in groundwater is largely driven by oxidation-reduction (redox) processes. Redox processes are a group of biotically driven reactions in which energy is derived from the exchange of electrons. In groundwater, this commonly occurs through decomposition of organic matter (carbon) by microbes, which consumes dissolved oxygen (DO). Under low DO conditions, iron (Fe), manganese, and arsenic can dissolve from coatings on aquifer sediments and be released into groundwater. Therefore,...

In a crude-oil-contaminated sandy aquifer at the Bemidji site in northern Minnesota, biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons resulted in transient increases in magnetic susceptibility under high water table conditions. The magnetic susceptibility subsequently decreased again when the water table dropped. This data set was assembled to illustrate the cause of the magnetic susceptibility changes. These data show that alkalinity is high and dissolved oxygen is low in the area where the increased magnetic susceptibility is found. The decrease in the magnetic susceptibility can be attributed to the long term decline in sediment Fe(III) concentrations with time. The decrease is caused by iron reducing bacteria converting...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides a comprehensive dataset of water-quality data and sampling-site characteristics collected in 1978–2018 during a study of the effects of land disposal of treated wastewater on groundwater quality in an unconsolidated sand and gravel aquifer on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Treated sewage-derived wastewater was discharged to rapid-infiltration beds at Joint Base Cape Cod for nearly 60 years before the disposal was moved to a different location in December 1995. The discharge formed a plume of contaminated groundwater that partly discharges to a glacial kettle lake about 1,600 feet from the beds and extends about 4.5 miles toward coastal saltwater bodies at Vineyard Sound....

Water-quality data for groundwater samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey from 79 wells in Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1982-2015. Data consist of field properties and results of laboratory analysis for concentrations of inorganic constituents, dissolved gases (methane, ethane and propane), radon-222, gross alpha and beta radioactivity, radium-226, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and methane isotopic composition in groundwater samples. Dataset prepared as part of 2015 study for which 79 wells were sampled and includes comparable results for 18 of the 79 wells that were sampled for previous studies in years 1982, 2007, 2011-13. In 2015, groundwater samples from all 79 wells were analyzed for all constituents...

In crude-oil-contaminant plumes the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is mainly hydrocarbon degradation intermediates only partly quantified by the diesel range total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPHd) method. To understand potential biological effects of degradation intermediates we tested three fractions of DOC: (1) solid phase extract (HLB); (2) dichloromethane (DCM-total) extract used in TPHd; and (3) DCM extract with hydrocarbons isolated by silica gel cleanup (DCM-SGC). Bioactivity of extracts from five wells spanning a range of DOC was tested using an in vitro multiplex reporter system that evaluates modulation of activity of 46 transcription factors; extracts were evaluated at concentrations equivalent to the well...
