The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board collected produced water samples for analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the eight California oil fields of Fruitvale, Lost Hills, North Belridge, Orcutt, Placerita, South Belridge, Midway-Sunset, and Buena Vista from 2016 to 2020. Sampled sites included oil wells; injectate from tanks, pipelines, and injection wells where produced water from many wells, after removal of oil, is stored or transported prior to underground injection; integrated produced water from many oil wells collected from pipelines before oil removal; and surface disposal ponds where produced water, after removal of oil, is disposed...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during October 2016 along 1,443 line kilometers in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley near Lost Hills, California. These data were collected in support of groundwater salinity mapping and hydrogeologic framework development as part of the U.S. Geological Survey California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater program and the California State Water Resources Control Board’s Program of Regional Monitoring of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production. Minimally processed binary AEM data received from the contractor were imported into the Aarhus Workbench software (Aarhus Geosoftware, Aarhus, Denmark) and processed. Filters were applied to inclinometer...

Data were acquired by SkyTEM ApS with the SkyTEM 312 time-domain helicopter-borne electromagnetic system together with a Geometrics G822A cesium vapor magnetometer. The survey was designed to cover the...

This data release Child Item contains groundwater elevation data and the associated model/code used to create groundwater elevation surfaces in and around the Lost Hills and Belridge Oil Fields. The data and model provided here are part of an interpretative manuscript by McMahon and others (2023). The data compiled and analyzed here are part of the California State Water Resources Control Board Oil and Gas Regional Monitoring Program and the U.S. Geological Survey California Oil, Gas, and Groundwater (COGG) Program.

An investigation was done by the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board's Program of Regional Groundwater Monitoring of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production, to assess the effects of oil and gas production activities on nearby groundwater resources. During November 2016–September 2017, 30 samples were collected at groundwater wells and 1 sample was collected at a surface-water site. This dataset contains site information and water chemistry results for samples collected near the Lost Hills and North and South Belridge oil fields, Kern County, California. Samples were analyzed for water-quality indicators, major and minor ions, nutrients, trace elements,...

Deterministic laterally constrained inversions of the processed airborne electromagnetic data were developed using the AarhusINV code implemented in Aarhus Workbench software. Inversion parameters were...

To determine aquifer characteristics, pneumatic slug tests were performed on selected zones and aquifers at a monitoring site near the Lost Hills oil field in the Southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County. On May 30th and 31st, 2018, pneumatic slug tests were performed at five monitoring wells located at the multiple-well groundwater-monitoring site LHSP (26S/21E-07J1 through –J5) near Lost Hills, CA in the Southern San Joaquin Valley. Data were collected using In-Situ LevelTROLL 500 30psig pressure transducers set to record the depth to water level below land surface at one second intervals. Computations were performed using Aqtesolv software and analyzed using the KGS Model package for overdamped slug tests performed...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) collected produced water and casing gas samples from petroleum wells and other oil-field sites in selected oil fields in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County in 2016 and 2017. The samples were collected as part of the Water Boards Regional Groundwater Monitoring Program (RMP) of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production. Samples included produced water and casing gas collected from oil wells, produced water collected from surface produced water disposal ponds, and injectate stored in tanks planned for underground injection. Samples were collected from the Fruitvale oil field on...

This dataset contains summarized historical groundwater salinity observations from wells near the Lost Hills and Belridge oil fields in the southwestern San Joaquin Valley, Kern County, California. Total dissolved solids (TDS) concentration, electrical fluid conductivity (EC), and well construction information were aggregated from public data sources and local water management agencies. Trends in total-dissolved solids (TDS) concentrations and fluid conductivity were assessed on a well-by-well basis to develop a dataset of salinity observations to support the interpretation of resistivity data derived from an airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey flown in October 2016. Results of the trend analysis were used to...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board compiled and analyzed data for mapping groundwater salinity and characterizing aquifer systems in and near selected oil and gas fields in California. Data for the Lost Hills, North Belridge, and South Belridge oil fields include production and injection volumes, oil show data, formation pressure data, digitized borehole geophysical data, geochemical analyses of produced water samples, geological formation depths, and geophysical data associated with estimating groundwater total dissolved solids (TDS) of formation water. All data reported here are used in an accompanying interpretive manuscript. These data have...
