This preliminary report is a summary of progress made during the 2006-07 field seasons reconstructing depositional systems in Tertiary strata exposed in the Homer-Kachemak Bay area.The study area addressed in this report extends from Clam Gulch in the north to Coal Cove in the south.Tertiary strata in this area are only mildly deformed and provide a relatively clear view of depositional systems and sand body geometries along the eastern basin edge and their change from basin edge to more basin axial positions.
This report provides detailed (1:63,360-scale) mapping of the Tanana A-1 and A-2 quadrangles (500 square miles; equivalent to eight 7.5-minute quadrangles). The area is part of the Manley Hot Springs-Tofty mining districts and adjacent to the Rampart mining district to the south of the Tanana B-1 Quadrangle. This report includes detailed surficial, structural, stratigraphic, and paleontologic data. Based on the resulting geologic maps, field investigations, and laboratory materials analyses, the report also includes derivative maps of geologic construction materials and geologic hazards. The Missouri Geological Survey (MGS) mineral resource file collection is a one-of-a-kind collection, dating to the early 1900s, that contains unique geologic information not recorded elsewhere. Due to the historic nature of the collection the data it contains would be impossible to replicate today. These data are invaluable to present day geologic research, field and mine-related projects as well as engineering and construction projects. The files not only contain irreplaceable physical geologic information, but document the evolving geologic interpretations and nomenclature during a dynamic time in the science of geology. During 2006 and 2007 the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys conducted reconnaissance surficial-geologic mapping in segment 1 of the Alaska Highway corridor, which straddles the Alaska Highway through the Tanana River valley from Delta Junction to the eastern boundary of the Mt. Hayes Quadrangle. Surficial-geologic deposits were initially mapped by interpreting ~1:63,360-scale, false-color infrared aerial photographs taken in August 1980 and field verified in 2006-2007.
