Survey of geology, geologic materials, and geologic hazards in proposed access corridors in selected quadrangles, Alaska

As part of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) effort to make final recommendations of federal land parcels to be considered for selection by the State of Alaska according to provisions of the Statehood Act, a decision was made to identify and evaluate potential access corridors. Corridor maps were compiled for a total of 78 quadrangles throughout Alaska. This map suite shows relevant geologic information at a scale of 1:250,000 for 10-mile-wide corridors straddling centerlines for proposed access routes throughout Alaska. Surficial-geologic map of the Kavik River area, west-central Mount Michelson Quadrangle, northeastern Brooks Range, Alaska

This dataset is comprised of a vector topographic and hydrologic base map illustrating the Kavik River map area, including the Mount Michelson C-5 and B-5 Quadrangles and portions of the Mount Michelson C-4 and B-4 Quadrangles. The geospatial data in this dataset were vectorized from scanned raster topographic maps published by the U.S. Geological Survey.

Surficial-geologic map of the Kavik River area, west-central Mount Michelson Quadrangle, northeastern Brooks Range, Alaska

During the 2006 field season, the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys conducted remote mapping as part of the Kavik River STATEMAP project.This surficial-geologic mapping was conducted to provide additional detail to the STATEMAP comprehensive geologic mapping as well as to serve as a stand-alone map publication.

Geologic map of the Kavik River area, northeastern Brooks Range, Alaska

The 1:63,360 Kavik River geologic map area consists of ~620 square miles and ties together previous DGGS mapping in the Sadlerochit and Shublik Mountains area of the western Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) on the east and the structurally complex foothills and mountain front near the Kemik gas accumulation on the west. The map area exposes a unique intersection of North Slope stratigraphy where all three major depositional megasequences are mappable in close association (Ellesmerian, Beaufortian, and Brookian).
